“I don’t have a gun. Stop shooting,” were the last words said by Michael Brown, an 18-year-old from Ferguson, MO, who was shot by cops at least six times (Chuck). He had his hands in the air, was unarmed, and complied with police commands. However, his life was still brutally ended by the officer, Darren Wilson. Wilson, and the other cops who have committed brutal acts of violence or even murdered nonwhite citizens who haven’t been dangerous or a risk of safety have committed these actions because of close mindedness, exceptionalism, and the belief of many stereotypes that say that nonwhites are more likely to commit a crime or be dangerous than whites.…

It is evident that America is a melting pot and always has been a country with diverse groups of people. Due to the increasing racial and ethnic diversity, people are labeled and grouped into categories mainly for convenience and familiarity (Healey & O’Brien, 2015). Over the course of this semester, I have learned numerous terms, concepts, and theories concerning minority groups in the United States. Of those things, the most intriguing and eye opening information that struck a chord inside of me concerned the stereotypes that affect minority groups, in addition to the prejudice and discrimination these group members face. Before this course, I had heard many stereotypes, joked about and ran from them, but it never occurred to me how detrimental…

It is hard to judge which racial classification someone falls under, simply because it is an unnecessary, over-generalizing label we stick to ourselves. We each have a specific ethnicity or ethnic background from our families, and while I don’t believe this label should define us, either, it is at least a more accurate description of ourselves than race ever will…

Whenever the subject of race and ethnicity came up in my classes, I would always sit back and listen to what people had to say. Usually it was because I never really knew the difference between the two. I eventually knew what the difference between the two was and I learned that a lot of people did not know the difference between the two were either. The way I differentiate between the two is race is your genetic makeup, something you cannot control and ethnicity is who your are defined by the environment you are surrounded by.…

In Rebecca Skloot’s book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, racial stereotyping against minority patients is predominant in every aspect of health care. Many of these stereotypes in Skloot’s book painted blacks as unintelligent and vulnerable and led to many doctors taking advantage of their patients. Henrietta Lacks was one of these patients and unfortunately doctors made millions off of her cancerous cervix cells without her informed consent. Her cells, named HeLa cells, helped cure the polio virus and contributed to numerous other medical findings, but her and her family received none of the money earned from HeLa cells. Unfortunately, stereotyping based on race still occurs today and it has affected the lives of others terribly just like they did to Henrietta in the 1950s.…
