I live in Vietnam for 4 years and have experience first-hand how Asians really drive. The traffic is a free for all, there is people coming from the north, south, east, and west. It is not that Asian can’t drive; there are no rules where they are coming from and it is every man or woman for themselves. Asians are actually very good defensive driver if you look at Vietnam, because they have to dodge plenty of obstacles like trees on the street, bus, and taxi that is all coming towards you. Invisible and Struggling Asian Americans are generally known for their diligent work ethics, their high levels of education and the high paying job that follows from their education. This stereotype is even supported with statistical data, Asian Americans holding a higher median household income, $66,000, compared to the general population’s $49,800 (Pew Research Center). With a rise in Asian immigrants and the Asian American populace as a whole and how they are projected to be the largest minority group by 2055 (Cepeda), the U.S. economy seems to have a bright future ahead. However, the well-known fallacy of stereotypes is that they have their exceptions and also that statistics sometimes can be framed to skew the situation. Hunger and…

Dismissing a Harmful Myth The “all Asians are smart stereotype” is not something new and was actually addressed over twenty years ago in an essay by Ronald Takaki. The essay opens with rhetorical questions to get the audience thinking to set the problem and transitions directly into the issue by stating the stereotype of Asians as the model minority. The rest of the essay displays statistics and experiences of Asian Americans to help argue that Asian Americans do not have it as easy as the majority of “politicians and pundits” seem to believe. The author brings to attention that this stereotype only increases their inequality and creates a sense of animosity toward them from African Americans.…

    1) As stated in the text, "Asian Americans constitute an extremely diverse panethnic category" and that the term "Asian Americans" is "nothing more than a convenient category that enables us to look at the general characteristics of the various Asian groups together, in comparison with other ethnic populations in the United States" (Marger, p245). To me, the term "Asian American" is too broad and is being applied to a very large number of individuals who are not much alike at all. People are so quick to put them in this category together, mainly because they are looking at the the general makeup characteristics. Some of these characteristics include faint yellowish- beige skin tone; relatively slim and petite frame built; thick-jet black…

In many ways, Asian Americans have accomplished gaining the “American Dream” of getting a higher education, working a great job and financially over achieving. Therefore, Asian Americans are labeled as the model minority, a diligent and hardworking group that other minorities should follow (Le, 2011, p.13). Model minority is defined as a minority group of people who are expected to accomplish a higher degree of socioeconomic success than the average economic status (Wiki, 2016, p.9). But in reality, after the Latinos and Blacks, Asian Americans are the most likely to have highest high school dropout rates and are less likely to have access to higher education than other groups (Le, 2011, p. 4). Because of this model minority label Asian Americans…

One clear proof of women being better drivers is the small number of accidents recorded over years contrasted with men. Since men typically drive more miles than women do, they often insist that they have more ability on the road. Proving or disproving such a claim is almost impossible. What can be quantified, however, are accident statistics. Crashes involving male drivers often are more severe than those involving female drivers for many reasons.…

Asian Americans are 5.4% of the U.S. population, which consists of over 45 distinct nationalities who speak over 100 language (Hing, 2012). When the Pew Center released its 2012 report called “The Rise of Asian Americans,” Asians were identified as the fastest-growing and highest-achieving racial group in the United State (Hing, 2012). Officials were surprised at the backlash from the Asian community. Lawmakers, advocates, and Asian American scholars claimed the findings were not complete because some factions of the Asian community were not represented and they felt the data was stereotypical.…

And more often than not, if an Asian female character is the main love interest, she 's being fought over by a white guy and an Asian guy, with the white guy ending up with the girl.” That shocking trope was pointed out in an interview with John Cho and Kal Penn ,stars of movie series ‘Harold and Kumar’.(“Diversity (or the lack thereof) In Media”) Stereotypes similar to that consist of the asian character always being labeled as the ‘intelligent and stoic” character or given a strong accent and an inability to speak clear english, only a broken…
