Stereotypes Involved In School

Decent Essays
Students like to be involved in their school and sometimes cannot due to the lack of activities for their liking, so if our school had extra money on their budget, they should spend it on more extracurriculars. This would give girls more opportunity. Some sports are for boys only, such as football and lacrosse. They could also use the money to buy more gear so that they could have co-ed teams. To satisfy those who do not enjoy sports, the budget could also be spent on activities other than sports. This would benefit the disabled because handicapped people cannot join any even if they want to be involved in the school. A portion of students who are interested in other subjects could go further into the technology department, such as coding or

Before coming to the event my initial thought was, the author just expanding on his thought behind the book, but once I was there and listening. I found that it was much more than just a story of two people, it is a story of how your decisions in life help mold your future. College is not just about your degree but about the things you intend to do with it after college, about the live you plan on changing. No matter your position in life, or your social class, you can become much more than people expect of you.…

Stereotype: A Threat to Intellectual Identity and Performance According to Claude Steele and Joshua Aronson, one cause of the relatively poor achievement faced by African Americans in school and by women in math and science-related fields is stereotype threat. This theory is based on the assumption that school success results from self-identification with the school and its subdomains which entails sustained motivation. If this relationship isn’t formed or is broken, achievement may suffer. Additionally, both authors advocate that an understanding and elimination of stereotype threats in an educational environment, also called “wise schooling,” is a solution to narrowing the performance gaps seen between the minority groups and white male students.…

Within the United States, there are many groups in which people separate themselves. More specifically, at my high school, there is also a lot of division and with that, prejudices and conflicts. When the slew of murders against unarmed African Americans occurred at the hands of the police, many students of color felt enraged and extremely sadden at this tragedy happening yet again. Some students expressed this frustration at school by having “black out day” or sitting during the pledge. Protesting in our own way, it had the effect of upsetting certain Caucasian students, causing them to throw offensive racial slurs against the minority population in school.…

It was the beginning of my junior year of high school that I was already feeling the pressure heavily on what college I should attend that would guide in the best way for my chosen career. During a break period, my friends and I were walking into a hallway speaking about the colleges we thought about attending when suddenly a student bumps into me, almost knocking me down completely, turned back and said, “Watch it wetback!” Shocked beyond words of expression that I had just encountered my first experience with racism. My mind was racing, contemplating whether or not to say something back, but I was already speaking by the time I could make a decision in my head yelling back, “How dare you assume and use such a derogatory term to me!” His response?…

“Oh, he plays football? He must be a dumb jock.” Stereotypes are apart of our everyday life. Instead of paying attention to how unique someone is, stereotypes are used to flesh out the rest of a person's characteristics when they can only observe a small portion of them. Every person, young or old, is labelled with either positive or negative stereotypes.…

    Stereotypes In Education

I think the overall theme of this week's readings was the negative impact of stereotyping within the education process and how it creates a bad learning environment for the students associated with said stereotypes while also making them victims of prejudice. All three readings draw from the various experiences of students being persecuted based on a stereotype that society has ingrained within us. A crucial point made by Chavez is how teachers and sometimes even principles will treat students of color in a much harsher fashion than the white students. Because of negative stereotypes they have inherited, the teachers tend to try and make examples out of the students of color and often treat them as if they aren't fit for the level of education…

SCHOOL: Children of all races in school is an amazing thing to see wherever you are because children weren’t always able to go to school or weren’t allowed. A child in school getting an education is where the power is. In school there are always crowds students that are just alike so if you’re different then you’re not welcomed into ones group. So the groups in school are the popular kids (rich or confident), athletes (jocks), gothic (emo kids), people in the band (band geeks) and the rebels. No matter how hard you try to stay away from these groups you end being in one or being a loner.…

    High School Stereotypes

How someone acts in high school usually determines his or her friends, relationships, and even enemies. People with similar attributes tend to stick together, forming a clique, which reinforces stereotypes. The smarter kids are seen as “nerds”, the athletically and physically “superior” are seen as jocks, and the nonconforming unique thinkers are considered “rebels.” I personally do not see myself fitting specifically into one of these categories for a variety of reasons. I have the qualities of academic success in a very competitive high school, multiple varsity sport letters, and opinions that I am not afraid to voice that together make me unique from anyone else.…

I turned down the corridor rushing for no other reason than to get away from the lonely feeling that kiss gave me. My class doesn't even start for another hour and all the other people I know here are more your friends than they are mine. I guess that's what happens when you date such a social boy and you are not even a social caterpillar let alone a butterfly. I hurry towards the one place on this campus that I can get peace.…

Humans enjoy organizing things. More specifically, we enjoy grouping other humans. Many social categories are formed based on the similarities of people in them. Stereotypes are clusters of characteristic that are associated with all members of a specific social group, often including qualities that are unrelated to the objective criteria that define the group. They are based on the assumption that people have certain characteristics because of their membership in a particular group.…

Acceptance of the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, queer and more) community has come a long way, but the future of the community is going through the toughest years of their lives. Children spend 12 years in school, during this time they figure out who they are. The goal that the school system has for these children is for them to be educated. Yet most kids grow up learning how to hate themselves, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community. They have no representation or support.…
