Nahid gets frustrated with Nasser when he spits out her food and sulks all day, “ I’ve had it with always having to take care of everything! You’re the man! You should help support your family! But no!!! Your hands are too delicate for chores”(42). Nahid married Nasser out of love whereas Nasser married Nahid for her mother’s wish. When a man marries a woman, especially in an Eastern family, he takes care of his family and puts food on the table. However, in this graphic novel, Nahid is the “man” in the house because she takes care of the children, works, cleans the house, cooks, buys supplies etc; while Nasser plays music all day. Nahid holds her family together and takes care of them. She supports Nasser in his music career and all she asks in return is for love/ appreciation. Satrapi uses gender studies to show that women are contributing their share of the work and are being unappreciated. Satrapi demonstrates the expectation and pressure that’s put upon a man to do his duties and lead his family.
