When transitioning from the education world into the world of employment and being an adult, there are several things that you can do to advance yourself and make yourself stand out among your contemporaries. However, there are also things you can do to disqualify yourself, and one of those things is having inappropriate content on your social media account. To ensure your best chances at success in the professional world, you should seriously consider whether your social media accounts display the professional image you wish to portray to potential employers, and if not you should take steps to rectify that. An unprofessional picture that would be better suited for Tinder should not be posted on your Twitter, where the whole world can see. The next type of posts to avoid are anything pertaining to drugs are alcohol. Even though alcohol is legal, drugs are not and any employer does not want a negative influence like that in a workplace. In addition, this could make you an inconsistent employee, as they could be worried about you potentially calling in sick to work or potentially having to go to rehab, as there is no way of knowing if the picture is indicative of any underlying issues.
The next type of posts to avoid is anything that could be seemed as discriminatory. In today’s day and age, anything that could have even a slight connotation of being racist could have a disastrous consequence for any affiliated company. As a result, companies have zero tolerance for any discrimination on social media, whether by employee prospects or current employees. You obviously went to college with the obvious intention of getting a good job and making a living for yourself, and now you’re presented with the idea that something that is as seemingly private and innocuous as your social media accounts could lead to you failing to achieve that goal. However, before you go on a puritanical annihilation of your social media accounts, there are several things you should know when evaluating a post. The first and seemingly most important is does your social media profile match the information presented in your resume. Let’s say that you listed Baldwin Wallace as your college in your resume, but listed yourself as an Ohio State alumni on Twitter. Or it could be something as simple as talking about being stressed out over a paper when your resume lists that you work well under pressure. A few more things to look at is does your account reflect a good personality and a professional image, because in the end, you are becoming a member of a team and they need to find the best fit. If you are in any doubt on whether to keep a post or not, try to determine how your grandmother would feel about it. Another way is to have your mom check to make sure everything is good, as at least in my personal experience, my mom usually tells me to delete posts.
