I found the article very informative because Kim Scott not only gave readers guidance on management but also descriptive examples of what they mean. The section that relates to me the most is when her boss criticized her for using the word um. There are many people who struggle with the word um during their presentation or when speaking. Honestly, I have a habit of using um too and one thing that has helped me is slowing down while speaking. To think of it, It is interesting to know that throughout my whole life, no one has ever said: “hey, try not to use um so much because you sound stupid.” In college, after taking a communications course, I came to the conclusion that I wanted to take um out of my vocabulary. I think she would motivate many of the millennial managers in the class because most of us are just starting to manage people or will soon. Two key ideas that stood out to me the most was 1) make it easier to speak truth to power and 2) put your own oxygen mask on first. The first one is easier said than done because who would want to criticize their boss? I know that it would be hard for me to criticize my boss because I do not want my boss to feel that I think he or she is a bad boss. I know that she says this is not the time for us to be a boss killer but you do not want your boss to lose trust in you. Similar to a relationship, trust is big and if you start to criticize your boss, they will lose trust in you. Secondly, “put your own oxygen mask on first.” Along the same lines to what Scott said, “you can’t possibly give a damn about other people if you don’t give a damn about yourself. This is true in many ways because you need to take care of yourself before taking care of other people. You need to put your own oxygen mark on first because you cannot help anyone if you are dead.
