On T.V today, movies and shows portray an imagery of false views that cause viewers to believe misled information. For example, in the shows “Black Jesus” “Friends” and “South Park” states stereotypes causing the viewers to dive into view misinformed information. In the show “Black Jesus” provides stereotypes stating that it’s ok to do the bad temptations of the world. As the show “Black Jesus” came on T.V, I immediately went to watch the show because I am a very religious guy, and if there is a show about religion I will go watch the show. When I watched the show it gave me bad perceptions into believing drinking alcohol until you can’t think straight is ok because I saw the show were the actor of Jesus was doing it on T.V, so I thought it was ok. Since I thought it was ok; I started drinking at home till my mind cannot think straight, but then realized quickly not to fall into temptations I see on T.V. On the show “Friends” it showed a group of only white cast being best friends, so it made think “maybe it’s ok to just have one group of people only being one race as my friends.” Since the show influenced me into believing that only having a group of friends that is one race and language is ok; I started to have only one group of friends being one race and language for a long period of time. The show “Friends” made me think falsely on life, but gladly after time past I started creating a group of friends with different races and languages. Since the show “South Park” stated that gingers are disgusting people; I started to believe that gingers are disgusting people for a period of time. Because I take what I watch on T.V to seriously; I started to look down on gingers and not be friends with them at all. Every time I would see a ginger person I would get disgusted, and not want to look at them because I started to think they are bad disgusting people with no moral to live. I understand now that I should not look down upon someone because of the way they look, and should treat them the way that I would want to be treated. Personally, I wouldn’t want anyone to look down upon me just because of the way I looked for it will cause me to have self-doubts and depression.

ANALYSING AND UNCOVERING “INTENT” The racial stereotypes present in Disney/Pixar movies are intentional because the dialects used by the characters of the said stereotype promotes negative connotations. If a person unconsciously and without intentions draws a character that looks like a racial stereotype then it can be truly seen as an accident, but if that person also says they “unconsciously” and “without intentions” gave that character a voice that perfectly fits the stereotype as well can one really say it was an accident? In the movie “The Jungle Book (1967)” where King Louie and his tribes of apes ask Mowgli to teach them how to be “human”.…

Throughout the history of motion pictures, film has been used to control how the general public views certain demographics of people. In particular, the black community has hitorically been viewed in a negative light. Through stereotypes such as Bucks, Toms, Coons and Mulattos, African Americans are put into subcategories that diminish their value as a human being. Often played by white actors in blackface, these characters exaggerated stereotypes that were used to confine the way black people were viewed and ultimately treated. Once seen as shocking or appalling, overtime these characters have become normalized and are seen in modern day cinema.…

Movies have been around for over a century, and most of these movies are made to entertain. One genre in particular, comedy, often enforces stereotypes in an effort to get a laugh out of the audience. The problem is that even if the audience is enjoying the film, the groups that are stereotyped in the film will suffer consequences from society. For example, in the movie Legally Blonde, character Elle Woods is extremely stereotypical towards gay men in one scene. Elle Woods is a lawyer in a court case against Brooke Windham who has been accused of murdering her husband.…

As a child, my favorite thing to watch on TV was The Cosby Show. When the show was on, I was a Huxtable. And in reality, I was still pretty damn close to being a Huxtable. I was the youngest child of a black, upper middle-class family that resided in New York. My parents both had post-graduate degrees – in fact my father, like Heathcliff Huxtable, was a good-humored physician.…

Overall, empirical evidence indicates that the viewing of such negative depictions among audiences promotes false and harmful viewpoints about African Americans in society. In particular, research indicates that exposure to negative characterizations of African Americans in the media promotes pessimistic attitudes and beliefs relating to intelligence, work ethic, socioeconomic status, criminality, and overall values. The authors of the article “Portrayal of Minorities in the Film, Media and Entertainment Industries” states, “One study found, for instance, that two years of viewing Sesame Street by European-American preschoolers was associated with more positive attitudes toward African and Latino Americans. Another study found that white children exposed to a negative television portrayal of African-Americans had a negative change in attitude toward blacks” (Diversity in film and television: MediaScope). In addition to this Mastro states “In an early study examining the implications of television use on the self-esteem of Black adults, a study found that exposure to entertainment television had a negative influence on self-esteem (controlling for age, education, and viewing other forms of content).…

In today’s modern society, television has become a platform that can largely influence the minds of millions of people. Some of the most popular tv shows on the air are reality shows, like The Real Housewives of Atlanta. But, most of these reality tv shows have one very unfortunate factor in common. Most of these reality tv shows show certain racial and ethnic groups in a negative light by expressing negative stereotypes for views. These stereotypes in reality tv are very harmful to the groups affected and to society in general and should not be shown on television because they degrade the group being stereotyped, make people believe that those stereotypes are actually true, and will promote the popularity of even more stereotypes being…

They may argue that the stereotypes are intended to be comical and are exaggerated on purpose. They may argue that people should not believe that stereotypes in the media are what define a group in its entirety. For example, in the article “Race and Ethnicity in Entertainment”, Pat Cooper says that “he believes that the "activists" who condemn stereotyping simply need to develop a "sense of humor" about the issue, and stop assuming that one negative portrayal reflects badly on a whole community.” However, what may be funny to some people may not give the same effect to others. Many people may not appreciate the stereotypes depicted in television shows and may become offended by…
