Most officers are devastated when they kill someone on the job, even if they’re convinced they had no other choice. We are taught in the academy how to shoot and when to shoot. We go through rigorous training and simulations that prepare us for that dreaded moment when we have to pull our weapon. Majority of police shootings are done because somebody came at an officer with a weapon. The law states that any person is justified in using or threatening to use deadly force if he or she reasonably believes that using or threatening to use such force is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony. One of the hardest things in law enforcement, is having to pull your weapon and fire at a person who is upset at his girlfriend and has a gun in his hand waving it in all directions threatening to shoot himself or anyone who tries to stop him. The only thing worse, is when you get word that the guy or girl you shot is dead, that we had no choice but to take a life because of one stupid decision that someone made. It’s hard on us, some would be silent, and some would cry, some would be sick, but no one was ever happy. We are not all trigger happy, we are however willing to do what it takes to protect our brothers and sisters, the citizens, and ourselves.
