Stereotypes In The Movie Crash

Crash Crash is a movie about perception, ethics and morals. It shows characters from different ethnic backgrounds, social classes, and with different stories. It’s apparent that they are all different but they seem to share one thing in common. The characters try to not be their stereotype but they end up perpetuating their stereotypes. The movie highlights racists and it shows that even racists can be victims of racism and prejudicial thoughts. The characters assumptions are based on real life preconceived ideas. Jean Cabot assumed that the two black men walking down the street in a predominately white area were thugs clutched her husband and tried to go to the car as fast as possible. That is the same as a white woman on the elevator with a black person and clutches her purse because of the fear that they are going to snatch her purse. The only character that loosely shared the same views on life with me is Anthony. Anthony’s character really resonated with me because throughout the movie he tries to tell Peter how the system is set up against people of color. Anthony repeatedly contradicts himself a lot throughout the movie. He says he doesn’t fit into the thug stereotype but he and Peter steal cars for a living. Jean Cabot’s character is a perfect example of this. While getting her locks changed she said the Hispanic locksmith was gang affiliated because of his tattoos. She also said she would have to hire another locksmith because she thought he would make a copy of her keys and give it to his “homies”. Little does she know that he is a hardworking man that takes care of his family and has no affiliation with any gang. This just goes to show how our beliefs can cloud or
