Communication involves the ability to listen and communicate effectively in both the verbal and written format. The millennial generation has had access to electronics for most of their lives. They prefer to communicate in a language of text messaging slang and acronyms (Gibson & Sodeman, 2014). The central message delivered to Jenny and Norm is the perception that their communication skills are not adequate. Pozen (2013) pointed out “Negative feedback is an essential tool in the effective manager’s kit. But you must use it wisely and carefully. Focus on potential future improvements, instead of dwelling on past errors.” (para. 13). Your emails frequently leave me confused. They read more like a text message than a business email. My job is to help you be successful. I would like to share a few tools that were shared with me when I started. These tools have helped me succeed when using electronic communication. The first strategy is the five W’s. All of the emails you send should answer the questions of who, what, when, where, why and how. If the email answers these questions up front, you eliminate the need for follow-up emails requesting clarification reducing your inbox. Another strategy is the WIFM.
