Old and the New Money in the East and West Egg
“The Great Gatsby” is published in 1925 written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and told by Nick Caraway. Nick is a Yale graduate and the neighbor of Jay Gatsby. Nick tells us the story of Gatsby who is a millionaire and yet has only one desire to reunite with Daisy Buchanan, the love he lost five years ago. Gatsby’s journey ends up him taking the blame of a murder Daisy was responsible for and eventually getting shot and leading his own death. Her insincerity regarding Nick’s feelings is an example of her detached personality and her ability to dispose of people such as the way Tom disposes of the Wilson’s and disregards Daisy’s feelings by cheating on her multiple times. "I love Daisy too. Sometimes I will go off and take the wrong steps, but I always come back, and in my heart, I always love her" (Telgen 1997). They represent the stereotype of the wealthy whilst Gatsby is the direct portrayal of a man who has achieved the American Dream, self-made wealth and happiness. However, he highly critiques the special values of the upper class more than the others representing the specific time period. “The Great Gatsby”, brings us back to the fact how Daisy picks status over love. “I love Tom, but I love Gatsby too” (Hale 1790).
