This reflection of society materialized after Hurston experienced the stereotypical white society. In addition Hurston adds, “In your hand is the brown bag. On the ground before you is the humble it held-so much like the jumble in the bags, could they be emptied, that all might be dumped in a single heap and the bags refilled without altering the content of any greatly,”(Hurston 4). Comparing society once again Hurston realizes the “bags”, or people can be emptied and refilled without changing the content. The content of the bags represent the person’s imagination and thinking. By comparing the bags and content to people and their thinking Hurston concludes people are the same on the inside, despite different exterior appearances. The extended metaphors in “How it feels to be Colored Me” demonstrate the change of perspectives, due to stereotypical societies, following Hurston’s encounter with the different white society of Jacksonville.
