In today's modern world, society is full of stereotypes that create discrimination among groups of people. As a society we judge each other based on commentaries or where we come from. We try to see what makes us different instead of what makes us a community. Also, as a human race we tend to generalize people into groups and compare them to others who might look or act like them. People use stereotypes as a way to hurt or discriminate others because they don't understand them. Furthermore, I myself have been hurt by stereotype comments made towards my ethnicity. For example, when I was working as a party staff during the summer a customer came up to me and asked me where I was from, then he said you speak English very well for a Hispanic person. I felt insulted, I was really angry at him because speaking English in an educated manner doesn't have to do anything with your background. Nonetheless, I replied by saying thank you and kept working because I feel that once someone has a set of mentality it is hard to change it. From there on I've always been self-conscious and very careful with how I speak because I feel that in society people look down on …show more content…
Once she was faced with someone who called her a drug dealer because she came from Colombia. Due to the worldwide reputation of her country, Colombia, of being full of cartels, she was put in a situation where she felt like a criminal in society. Although, she has never taken or sold any types of drugs she was still discriminated by that person who only view her with judgment instead of for whom she really is. Manuela didn't say anything to that person because she didn't feel like it would change the situation or his view of her. Nonetheless, she feels sad that this is how some people in society view her as. No matter what people think of her or her country she says that she is still a proud Colombian and a Hispanic
