A Major Problem in Our Society: Stereotypes
We as a society and race are stuck in an endless cycle of stereotyping. If one is a black male then he is expected to be an excellent athlete with temper problems. Blonde-haired females are useless when it comes to intelligence. All African Americans are violent, lazy, very religious, and have a love for fried chicken. All Mexicans that come to America are illegal immigrants and love tacos. Males are stronger and more intelligent than females. The stereotypes don’t just stop there, the jokes keep coming and more stereotype sayings are created every day. We as human beings are naturally stereotyping one another based on what appearance we have.

In the past, the main stereotypes on women was that they were weaker than men, they were less intelligent, and should do only housework. This concept stuck with women for centuries, resulting in them not being able to get good jobs and receiving very little money. Nowadays, those stereotypes still stick but women aren’t effected by them anymore because they have proven most of those stereotypes to be wrong. As matter fact, one stereotype has changed, it use to be that women were less intelligent, now its women are smarter than men. However, black women in the urban community are getting heavily stereotyped by society. “It has been well documented that urban girls of color are at risk for early motherhood” (Leadbeater, p.284). When black girls are told at the young age that there’s a high chance they come be a teen mother, it can cause them to lose self-esteem. This puts stereotypical challenge in their mind because they have two choices: They can follow it or they can prove everyone …show more content…
If a school is in the urban community then the stereotype for them is that the students have bad grades, not a very good teaching staff, it’s full of colored people (blacks/Hispanics), and it has a bad event. While the suburbs have excellent academic students, predominantly white students, and its safe haven for the students. As I mentioned before, these stereotypes are true for a lot of case but it’s not all the time. Most of the time the kids are just following the stereotypical persona that was assigned to them by society. Kids are very influential which a good thing and a bad thing because if tell a kid that they are destined to be a failure because their parents was failures, then they have in their mind that “no matter what society will always look down on me.” This causes kids stress out about their future and into a pit of despair. “This second source of stress is specific to negatively stereotyped groups. It arises from a fear of reinforcing negative stereotypes about the intellectual ability of their racial group” (Aronson, McColskey, Montrosse, Lewis, and Mooney, pg.
