Stereotypes In Slasher Films

2.2 Previous Studies
Previously, some of the research has already done by some researchers regarding the stereotype, whether it is on the animation movie or popular films and television. These researchers will be also used as a reference in this research.
First is from Brewer (2009), the researcher analyzed about the stereotypic women portrayals in the slasher movies between 16 totals of the slasher films, 8 of original films and 8 of the remake films. The researcher found that there are a slight changes of portrayal of females in slasher films, which is the portrayal of women are more masculine and aggressive in some circumstances and in the usual time, the characters keep maintain the classic stereotypes.

3.1 Theoretical Framework
3.1.1 Indirect Characterization
Character is one of the significant elements inside the films, without any characters and any plot inside the films, the films would not exist. To go on with the flow of plot of the story, each of the characters that played inside the films has their own characteristic. There are some of the characteristics were showed directly and indirectly. In order to find out the characteristics that were showed indirectly by the characters, Rimmon-Kenan (2002) divided the indirect characterization method into 5, which are:
a. Speech
A character reveals the traits from how to talk, speak to other characters, from the choice of words and which tone the main characters used.
b. Thoughts
A character reveals the traits from the character private thought and feelings.

c. Effect on Other Characters/Reactions from the Other Characters

He believed that there are universal patterns in all stories and mythologies regardless of culture or historical period and he also believed that archetype is the part of the human mind that contains a collective unconscious which symbolizes an important human motive. Even though there are many of different types of archetypes, Jung defined 12 primary basic archetypes, which are:
1. The Innocent, has freedom, seeks for safety, always gain help from the other and craved for happiness. The innocent character is the dreamer, romantic and hopeful character yet naïve. Traits: optimism, faith, trust, hope, simplicity, dependent. For example, Alice – Alice in the Wonderland.
2. The Orphan, usually the motherless child who seeks for safety, comfort and need love from the others. The goal is to find who they are, what they are going to do, and a place where they fit in. Traits: empathy, realism, worries. For example, Pinocchio – Pinocchio.
3. The Warrior/Hero, never give up in doing something, always standing up for others, always achieve their goals, overcome obstacle and persist in difficult times. Traits: courageous, tenacious, brave, tough, courageous. For example, Harry
