Stereotypes In Sitcoms

There is no doubt that nowadays society is full of different stereotypes and bias about people of other nationalities, class, race, or gender. A person can never be abroad but still talking about German to be very punctual, British – pedantic, Italians – passionate and American hard working. If to question ourselves how do we know all that and what makes us think this way, the answer will be rather simple, our conception about people is formed on the basis of history, literature and, of course television. As a matter of fact, the role of television has increased greatly recently and what is more directors used to create certain types of characters to match viewers needs. Talking about two comedy sitcoms that are taken under consideration, “Friends” and “How I Met Your Mother”, they have a lot of in common, starting from similar plotline up to some similarities between their protagonists. In fact, the plotline is similar to the one in “Friends”, as here also there is group of people of different social classes and educational backgrounds. Talking about their appearance, all the protagonists are in good shape, thin and attractive. However, the issue of “gender” differs in this sitcom from the one in “Friends”. In fact, female characters are represented here as strong individuals who want to develop their career and pursue their goal in life, which sometimes prevail their desire to have a family. However, once again there is no other characters here than white, which describes Americans only from one prospective, showing single story of white people and their everyday life. It should be noted, that it creates the impression, that only whites can be considered as true, fully fledged
