In her novel The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton explores the theme that stereotypes are unfair and that therefore, one cannot judge an entire group of people based on these prejudices. A person is more than just a product of their community or circumstances, which is seen to be true in the characters of Johnny and Ponyboy. The Outsiders has two types of people, there are Greasers and Socs. The Greasers were the middle class unlike the soc who are more rich and Greasers are more wilder.…
Innocent Until Proven Guilty “A person is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.” In the play, Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose, an 18-year-old boy is on trial for the murder of his father. After many pieces of evidence were presented, the three that are shaky include the position the knife was in, the man hearing the boy threaten his father, and the woman who is in question because of her glasses. Based on these, the boy is not guilty. One piece of evidence that proves the boy’s innocence is the stab wound.…
In both of the trials, the citizens and other members of jury believe that the defendant is guilty based solely on the defendants’ race; however, Atticus and Davis both disagree with the popular opinion and are more than willing to prove and support their own opinion. In 12 Angry Men , Juror 3 loudly proclaims that the boy is guilty and that all ghetto youths are criminals, while Juror 7 wants the jury to reach a decision quickly because he wishes to attend a baseball game that evening. Juror 1 conducts a preliminary ballot and eleven jurors vote for conviction without hesitation. When Davis, or Juror 8, is the only one to disagree and cast the only dissenting vote, Juror 10 gruffly declares that Davis is a weak-willed "bleeding heart". While Juror 2, a shy and stammering bank clerk, appears to be maintaining his guilty verdict because he feels intimidated by the more outspoken jurors, Davis proudly stands his ground refusing to conform to the others’ opinions.…
The Outsiders The Outsiders was written nearly 50 years ago and schools still use it in the classroom today. It was based around stereotypes of groups, such as Greasers, in the book. Ponyboy, the main character, is different than most Greasers because he is smart and likes to read. In S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders, people’s stereotypes for the greasers aren’t always what they seem to be.…
In the play “Twelve Angry Men” there is a lot of prejudice. It mainly shows that people like to judge other people without any actual knowledge. Prejudice is still a major issue in the world and it will always be one. People like to judge others before even getting to know them. It is bad to be prejudiced before even trying something out or meeting someone.…
Certainty vs. Doubt In “Twelve Angry Men”, 12 jurors are given the tough task to determine if an 18 year old boy is guilty or innocent of murdering his father. A variety of personalities are present at the table as the men discuss the boy’s future. After the jurors cast their vote, it is evident that one juror, juror #8, is the only one who voted not guilty.…
In the courtroom justice knows no racial difference, gender, nor emotion, justice is based on facts and evidence. In Harper Lee’s book To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus Finch makes this argument showing us his belief in the Justice system and the trust he places on the jury. Atticus enforces his ideas by providing convincing evidence and reason. Atticus urges the jury to use common sense and not to base their decision on racial prejudice. For example, Atticus states “It has relied instead upon the testimony of two witnesses whose evidence has not only been called into serious question on cross-examination, but has been flatly contradicted” (L14-17)…
The most obvious form of prejudice is racial prejudice, however, on a wider scale certain jurors showed their prejudice in the form of preconceived notions and irrational ideas. Gilovich asserts that the tendency is “for people’s preconceptions to bias their interpretations of what they see”. (1993.p15) Although the ethnic background of the defendant is never revealed, the reader is led to believe he is from a minority background. Juror ten is the most obvious example of someone who is racially prejudiced; he is immediately against the defendant because he is “one of them” and makes frequent references to “those people” he subsequently argues with juror five, also an inhabitant of the slums in an attempt to defend his statement that the boys slum background proves that he is “trash”.…
In his play Twelve Angry Men, Reginald Rose brings us back in time to 1957, to a jury room of a New York Court of Law where one man, Juror #8, confronts the rest of the jury to look at a homicide case without prejudice, and ultimately convinces Juror #2, a very soft-spoken man who at first had little say in the deliberation. Throughout the play, several jurors give convincing arguments that make one think about whether the boy is “guilty” or “not guilty.” Ultimately, one is convinced by ethos, logos, and pathos. We can see ethos, logos, and pathos having an effect on Juror #2 as he begins as a humble man and changes into someone brave at the end. Although all three modes play a part in convincing Juror #2, pathos is the most influential because…
This statement by juror nine gives the viewers an understanding on how good juror eight appealed to the emotions of the others. He did not say that the boy wasn’t guilty; he provided evidence, and showed the others that there are possibilities that the boy did not kill his father. The discussion continues as they bring up the testimony of the witnesses of the murder. Juror eight appeals to the emotions of the jurors once again;…
Stereotypes are everywhere in the world. Today many major groups of people are still being stereotyped due to certain events that are being witnessed around the world. In The Outsiders, there are two groups of people. They are socs and greasers. They are groups of people that stereotype each other.…
Several of the jurors get up to see it better.)” (Rose 39). The actions of the jury demonstrate that although they might not care as much as they should for the boy since Juror #8 cares, they are willing to listen. Juror #8 argues the evidence given throughout the trial to prove not guilty with reasonable doubt. This sets both plays a part in the sense that John does not have supporting evidence to prove his ideas while Juror #8…
Guilty or not guilty is a life threatening question for an eighteen-year-old boy in the film 12 Angry Men who has been tried for a first-degree murder. The eighteen-year-old boy has been accused of stabbing his own father and the case has been left in the hands of a twelve-man jury in which a guilty verdict mean the automatic death of the boy. Throughout the film, we are able to recognize various communication skills that the twelve individuals display. Leadership There are two types of leaders shown in this film. Since the beginning of the film juror number eight demonstrated to be an emergent leader by not being a follower even though he was the only one who pleaded not guilty and was willing to stand alone against the rest of the jury who pleaded guilty.…
What if you were on trial for first degree murder? In the movie 12 Angry Men by Reginald Rose, a young eighteen year old male was on trial for supposedly murdering his own father. The twelve men on the jury were faced with different opinions and facts that questioned their morals and values in life. I feel as if this movie did have “worth” in my life. I think the movie had worth because no one should ever be stereotyped, judged, and accused based on what other people say.…
The movie Inglorious Bastards by Quentin Tarantino begins with a Nazi officer investigating rumors about Jewish stowaways hiding on a small French farm. This intense scene provides the viewer with information regarding the background of the story if they understand film analysis, psychoanalytic and sociologic concepts. The camera work in this scene both foreshadows events and establishes power for our main antagonist of the film, Colonel Hans Landa. The unique way in which the scene is filmed allows us to read the character’s emotions on a much deeper level. Tarantino disguises a lot of valuable information from the viewer that can only be discovered through the use of media analysis.…
