Stereotypes In My Life

It’s a warm and humid summer afternoon in Kansas City. So humid where you can just feel your skin becoming moist and sweaty just from standing outside. The gym is even more hot and uncomfortable. I’m a young adolescent in grade school watching my oldest brother play competitive basketball. Normally, I’m forced to attend these activities as I’m too young to be at home by myself. There were about 200 people just packed in one big gymnasium. Parents spectating, players working their tails off, and teams warming up and stretching ready to compete. The loud whistles from referees are blowing, basketball shoes are squeaking, and shouting from the coaches making play calls. I grew up with sports in my life and these events and tournaments I love watching and live for playing in.
My brothers team is fairly diverse. White and black players from Shawnee Mission, Overland Park, and Kansas City. Every one

The kids and young adults of Overland Park are commonly very ungrateful and unaware towards people that live in other areas. That’s why this relationship with Justin and my brother’s other friends were really a huge impact in my life. I was one of the only kids in my school to have a friend that wasn’t white or not from Overland Park. So many kids in Overland Park don’t even touch foot outside their community because parents don’t want them being in bad areas or interacting people not in their area. They struggle with connecting to other people and understand how so many people struggle every day just feeding themselves. I learned about Justin’s background, his mom being a crack addict and his dad not being in his life consistently. These are things that would never happen in my life. My life in Overland Park was almost perfect, Justin’s life on the other hand wasn’t. Living in Overland Park made me who I am, but I definitely had to mature more to fully understand how grateful I am to live in that
