Stereotypes In My Community Analysis

Decent Essays
In my community, every day I see people struggling to maintain their lives because they are undocumented. I, myself, am able to understand this at a personal level because I hear the stories that they have to tell and I myself am undocumented. I have met dozens of people who have found their way into the United States in search of a better life than the one they had before, or have come in hope that they can support their family back home. I have spoken with these people and have found that they are struggling and that they are given a bad name because of stereotypes. The media has branded them as criminals, drug dealers, etc and I want to change the way people think about these people. I think that we have to go one step and a time, and

Stereotypes are everywhere in the world. Our ridged expectations of a community are sometimes all we know about that certain group. The students had a preconceived idea about the Harvard students being snobby and the Law students thought the students would not take the task seriously. This chapter really hit on many stereotypes throughout the chapter and how powerful it can be when stereotypes are broken. I would never think to take my class on a field trip to a courthouse to participate in a mock trial.…

The reason why I am interested in serving as an Executive Member of the NAACP chapter at Virginia Tech, is because I want to become more involved in the black community, and be a voice for those who do not feel as though they have one. There are many challenges that arise while attending Virginia Tech as an African American students. Whether it be issue with peers, professors, or the people who are native of southern Virginia. The NAACP seems to be a support system for those who are being discriminated against, and an organization whose goal is to teach the community on how to reduce the prejudices in our community.…

Ordinarily I would not be enthusiastic to read an excerpt like Whistling Vivaldi and Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us by Claude M. Steele, but on the contrary, I found that I was extremely impacted, this reading opened my eyes to an infinite amount of possibilities that I had not been worried about before. There were multiple sections of this reading that was baffling, I choose to write about a passage that dumbfounded me completely, I found this on page four of the excerpt under chapter 2 about 7 paragraphs in and it states “I became an expert in the language of fear. Couples locked arms or reached for each other’s hand when they saw me. Some crossed to the other side of the street. People who were carrying on conversations went mute…

Cultural problems in the United States are vast but one of the most underrated issues is illegal access to our country. Undocumented immigrants poses a giant problem for our culture and it actually affects us daily without even knowing. The personal experience with undocumented aliens comes from my Facebook and Twitter page, where throughout the past election and to this day is a controversy that people see from both sides. I’ve decided to look more into the issue so I have proof and knowledge of the subject to further my ideas and opinions on the matter. Solutions are what everyone is thinking and or talking about, it seems people cannot team together to solve the issue.…

With that being said fourty eight percent of Durham County residents are of Caucasian American descent this leaves a small area for other races like Native American’s , Asian American’s, Hispanic Americans and countless others to fill. However, by being in such a biased city it makes me want to branch out more and not only learn but accept other cultures. In Today's society it seems as though it is the cultural norm to make fun of some you do not understand and or to descriminate against someone because of the rumors you ave hear.…

The only thing that is talked about when it comes to people who are undocumented is the subject of immigration and deportation. It is evident that America is a melting pot and always has been a country with diverse groups of people. Due to the increasing racial and ethnic diversity, people are labeled and grouped into categories mainly for convenience and familiarity (Healey & O’Brien, 2015). Over the course of this semester, I have learned numerous terms, concepts, and theories concerning minority groups in the United States. Of those things, the most intriguing and eye opening information that struck a chord inside of me concerned the stereotypes that affect minority groups, in addition to the prejudice and discrimination these group members face. Before this course, I had heard many stereotypes, joked about and ran from them, but it never occurred to me how detrimental…

As I got older I learned that race and ethnicity would two totally different things. Race is used to define a person in society by their skin color, while ethnicity is the culture in which you grew up. A lot of people get the wrong idea of a person just by their skin color and assume they come from a particular culture. That’s how a lot of people get insulted and don’t want to speak to you. Ethnicity defines what you believe in and where your ancestors can from.…

Indigenous Australians lived on this land for thousands of years before the white European settlers came and took their land along with their lives. Since the settlers arrived they have been treated like animals, lesser beings to the white European settlers and their descendants. Normally people recognize the smiling faces they see on their neighbors front porches, but one week a year, neighborhoods all over the country are invaded by scary faces peering out at them. Stranger Danger? Don’t call the neighborhood watch quite yet! Those spooky smiles are Jack-O-Lanterns carved by festive neighbors and probably signal they will have some good loot on Halloween. I should call attention to the fact that America was built on immigrants, also the fact that most Americans descendants are immigrants. If anyone wants to make a change we should at least try to rally and petition and call attention to the fact that all immigrants’ want is to be accepted into a country that sold them a pipe dream of a real American life style. I want my voice to be heard so everyone can hear out loud that we shouldn’t be angry or upset with immigrants, but that we need to be understanding and willing to work with them so we can come together in our world. As just one person I just want my voice to be heard on this subject because in this world today we need to unite together and not be farther…
