Television dramas have the power to represent versions of reality, both subverting and normalising social and cultural stereotypes. The law drama series Suits (2011) reinforces the dominant ideologies of inequality by sexualisation of women and promoting a misconception of men. The show can be interpreted as a “man show”. The plot revolves around two white, straight, attractive, men: Harvey Spectre, who is a well known, big-headed, talented lawyer and Mike Ross, who has encyclopaedic knowledge however was undereducated associate. Jessica Pearson, is the black, female boss who could clearly be seen as a token character as she is both black and female and is leading one of the top law firms in Manhattan. Though she is the boss, Harvey manipulates and threatens Jessica, to get his way, showing that he is still dominant to her. Rachel and Donna are both told what to do either by Harvey, Mike and Louis and sometimes are even threatened to do as they are told. In Season 2, Episode 1, once Jessica finds out about Mike’s secret, he says that if Mike goes, he goes. Even in the photo to the left the males are placed in front of the females symbolising they are more powerful. Jessica, the boss, is at the same level as Mike who is just an associate. Both Rachel and Donna are the furtherest from the front as the are “less important” however the men would not be able to finish their work without the two females’ help. Both Jessica and Louis are looking at Harvey symbolising that he is the spotlight of the show. This in equality is a dominant ideology that females will always bow down to males no mater what there position is or what race they are.
