In the short poem “Legal Alien, line 15-20”, “Pat Mora”, the author states, “ A Mexican to Americans By looking at the quote and the text, a reader can learn that being stereotyped feels like a token sliding back and forth from what you really are and what everyone else expects, On campus, still perceive the stereotype of trying to fit in because people you expect you to be something because of your race,background, and even what you wear. By looking at this, society can assume that you are being pre judged before anything else because of your appearance, and students and myself react to this and try to impress the people by acting, dressing what is expected from others not show our passion and personality. It is important to note because this really shows how students’ and I can be affected and worry about small things and not the big picture, which is pleasuring yourself and living life to the fullest with no regrets. In Summation, society, and I can relate to this feeling of being not “good”enough for others, but I realized the big picture and we should not be judged for what we look like, also we should not judge, and the most important thing we should all note is that we should not be a, “handy token sliding back and forth between the fringes of both worlds, by smiling, by masking the discomfort …show more content…
In the reading “American History”, by “Judith Ortiz Cofer” the quote on page one,"Hey, Skinny Bones, pump it, girl. Ain't you got no energy today?" Gail, the biggest of the black girls who had the other end of the rope, yelled, "Didn't you eat your rice and beans and pork chops for breakfast today?". In in this example, readers learn how stereotype can cause a person to have a low self esteem by discriminate against them because their of race, and the quote above also shows the stereotype of the girls say “Elena”, eats beans and pork chops”, due to the fact that she is Hispanic Latino. The next quote in the story “American History”, also gives us an example how stereotype can affect our self image but this example directly hits more of academic performance “It took me days and many discreet questions to discover that Eugene was in honors classes for all his subjects; classes that were not open to me because English was not my first language, though I was a straight A student.” This shows the readers that stereotype is being used and it affects “Elena”, and others including me. Due to the fact that English was not “Elena’s” , first language ;she cannot take honor classes that is very qualified for. From my personal experience this this form of judgement of stereotype can ruin self image and academic performance, for example
