Despite being called as a secular country, India is widely known to be a “Hindu country” since majority of the population is Hindu. Culture stereotypes such as references to the Gods and Goddess are common portrayals in Bollywood movies. Gender stereotypes such as subordinate female roles and patriarchic males roles are also common. Religion stereotypes such as portraying the hero with Hindu-associated characteristics while the villain possesses Muslim-associated characteristics suggest the political stakes that even movies have. However, with growing diaspora role Bollywood movies undertake, such stereotypical themes had to change in some aspect so as to attract more audiences within and outside India. Hence, we can see that Bollywood industry are changing from being stereotypical to more westernized and targeting at global issues such as gender inequality and terrorism as seen in Kahaani.
