All through middle school and the first two years of high school my teachers would only tell me negatives in my work. This made me feel like I wasn’t good at anything they asked me to do. “This can be better,” “Come see me about your writing, it needs a lot of work,” “Stop talking about this, it sounds bad.” Nobody ever said anything good about my school work. Teachers think that this will strengthen a student’s ability to talk in front of people, but in reality it creates a horrible fear. If a student doesn’t want to present, they have a good reason. They aren’t lazy, they don’t want to get out of class. Glossophobia, the fear of talking in front of people. It has a real name and real symptoms. I myself am someone who cannot talk in front of people. When forced by teachers to present, my voice becomes shaky and I physically shake. I had to present for my Health class freshman year. I felt sick and I stuttered all through the presentation. People laughed and made fun of me for it. I think one of the worst things a teacher can do is force students to go so far out of their comfort zone that they would rather be violently ill than present for five minutes. This goes for answering questions in class as well. Just being put on the spot for two seconds causes stress for some people. In some classes, when students don’t raise their hand their grades get marked down. If a student does not answer questions in class but they actively take notes they still learn and I think that should be taken into consideration when
