Stereotypes In Education

Improved Essays
I think the overall theme of this week's readings was the negative impact of stereotyping within the education process and how it creates a bad learning environment for the students associated with said stereotypes while also making them victims of prejudice. All three readings draw from the various experiences of students being persecuted based on a stereotype that society has ingrained within us.
A crucial point made by Chavez is how teachers and sometimes even principles will treat students of color in a much harsher fashion than the white students. Because of negative stereotypes they have inherited, the teachers tend to try and make examples out of the students of color and often treat them as if they aren't fit for the level of education

In Lisa Delpit’s book Other People’s Children: Cultural Conflict in the Classroom depicts three main issues or controversies with teaching poor minority students, or being a black educator in a predominantly white field. How are white educators better suited to educate a minority, when they culturally do not understand nor take the time to understand their mannerisms and customs of other cultures? How education is racially divided, in seeing poor black students as less advantaged over their majority peers who may have more adequate opportunities at home. Herbert Kohl’s, “I Won’t Learn from You” is a novel that explores the lesson in how not to teach. Kohl discusses in detail ways in which student decides not to learn and the motivation behind why they have come to this decision. He has created a philosophy that allows both teachers and students to work together to become the creators of the students’ education and their success. Teachers can continue to teach, however, students are only going to take what is being taught and turn it into learning if they choose to and see a good reason to. Often times, students have a good reason as to why they choose not to, and this is what Kohl’s novel is about.…

For the Saints and the Roughnecks, class was a big factor into how resistance was accepting in school for one group and not the other. Being seen as good students, who were involved in a variety of activities, the Saints, who were upper-middle class, were able to skip class and participate in deviant behavior because they hid behind a façade. As well, they had access to more resources, for example cars, that allowed them the luxury to avoid getting caught. The community responded harsher to the Roughnecks as they were the ones who were caught.…

It is evident that America is a melting pot and always has been a country with diverse groups of people. Due to the increasing racial and ethnic diversity, people are labeled and grouped into categories mainly for convenience and familiarity (Healey & O’Brien, 2015). Over the course of this semester, I have learned numerous terms, concepts, and theories concerning minority groups in the United States. Of those things, the most intriguing and eye opening information that struck a chord inside of me concerned the stereotypes that affect minority groups, in addition to the prejudice and discrimination these group members face. Before this course, I had heard many stereotypes, joked about and ran from them, but it never occurred to me how detrimental…

Within the United States, there are many groups in which people separate themselves. More specifically, at my high school, there is also a lot of division and with that, prejudices and conflicts. When the slew of murders against unarmed African Americans occurred at the hands of the police, many students of color felt enraged and extremely sadden at this tragedy happening yet again. Some students expressed this frustration at school by having “black out day” or sitting during the pledge. Protesting in our own way, it had the effect of upsetting certain Caucasian students, causing them to throw offensive racial slurs against the minority population in school.…

African American students often faced several different obstacles that alter or sometimes deter their goals of continuing their college career and leading them to graduate. Between both readings, they explain how African Americans are portrayed as less than, which is one reason they do poorly in school settings. Steele calls this; stereotype threat. “Stereotype threat---- the threat of being viewed through the lens of a negative stereotype, or the fear of doing something that would inadvertently confirm that stereotype” (Steele, 46). This is a major obstacle when it pertains to the African American students education.…

Brand imprinting for actuation in life refers to the tactic of subconsciously influencing children to begin to buy or use a product in adulthood; a tactic used frequently by fast food chains. McDonalds specifically is infamous for using child’s toys, cartoon characters, in-restaurant playgrounds, and even having a clown as their official mascot. In a study conducted by University of Missouri-Kansas City and University of Kansas Medical Center, children showed significant brain activity when showed food logos compared to non-food logos: “Some research shows that children identify the golden arches for McDonalds before they know the letter M” (Bruce et al., 2012). In addition, even the food at McDonalds is addictive, and unhealthy. For example,…
