Stereotypes In Divergent Movie

Most movies present characters with supernatural abilities that humans would never be able to do (have), yet in the movie Divergent, the character Tris is surprisingly relatable to the viewers. In this seemingly Utopian society, all members must pick one of only five different factions, to which they must remain in for the rest of their life. The scene I chose shows Tris going through the Dauntless ritual after she chose them as her faction. She ends up climbing structures, getting onto a full speed train, and jumping off onto the top of a high story building. Despite being extremely hesitant, she seems to follow out of the fear of not making it and consequently being factionless. The movie does a great job communicating the barriers of society and stereotypes by comparing us to Tris.
The fact that Tris can only choose one of five factions for her entire life is in itself very restrictive, which reveals how she is, in a sense, trapped in a social barrier. Throughout the scene, the majority of the Dauntless are wearing pitch black outfits while she is wearing a plain gray dress, this contrast compares how stereotypes and unrealistic expectations separate us from others. Because she is from Abnegation, she’s used to helping others while the Dauntless’ fearlessness is completely foreign to her. The directors of Divergent pointed out how we all face some type of internal or external barrier -racial prejudice, social status, etc. - by using Tris as a character everyone could relate to. We are all very similar to Tris, we have so much to offer the world, but lots of obstacles get in our way and it’s only after we decide to take the risk and jump that we can escape all that hinders us from the limitless
