Stereotypes In American Sociology

In his 1959 book The Sociological Imagination, C. Wright Mills insists that people are formed by social, political, economic, and cultural processes that take place at a particular point in time. For example, people attend college for reasons beyond personal interest - there are always broader forces influencing the decision and ability to get a college degree. My family structure is composed of a firm and supportive family that encourages you to be your best in life and to achieve your goals. My family, ethnicity, gender, and my own personal interest have greatly influenced my choice to get a college degree. Most people have different aspirations have different aspirations in life. My ethnicity has been put under the assumption that we are either lazy, dumb, drug dealers, murderers, gang bangers, or most likely to go on welfare or become a rapper/basketball player. I’ve always wanted to be above those statistics and prove otherwise. Although these stereotypes can be harmful towards our self esteem, I believe that these stereotypes pinned against us motivates most of us Black people to become more or become better in life. As for my gender, a woman has always been put under the stereotypes of being too emotional, we’re best to stay home with the kids, we can’t be a doctor, or we shouldn’t be in charge. To break all these stereotypes we must aim at higher goals than expected and choose to succeed in these goals. These stereotypes have resulted in more determined women. Racial and gender stereotypes have always been a major issue in the world but it provides us with awareness about racial and gender groups. As a result, this has created a full force drive in me that motivates me to rise above these
