Stereotypes In A New School

Decent Essays
Christina, I am soon to start my academic career as a Freshman. New school, new you-right? That was some playful foreshadowing for what I am going to compose in this message. Cut to the chase; I have concerns with how I will be addressed during this coming school year.

Now, this is not a matter of nicknames, but a delicate situation of gender. I was assigned female at birth, but that is simply not who I am. For I am a male; a guy, a dude, whichever fits your fancy.

And because of this conundrum, I do not refer myself as "Althea Grace" rather, "Peter Francis". I don't use female restrooms, alternatively I use the male restroom ("What a clunky sentence!" I know. I was told to be very clear on that one). As you can see, this is a dilemma of sorts.

Furthermore, gym and restrooms. I will be honest, I don't see how restrooms will be a problem, I can avoid that. What I cannot avoid are locker rooms. In all honesty; the thought of gym class gives me anxiety attacks and figurative paralysis. I am simply not ready for it. The psychological horror is just too much. My Mother does not want me participating in gym class, and I, as a weak 13 year old, side with her. Is there an alternative credit? I have many a reason as to why I should not face gym class, I can explain more in depth, if you'd like.

I will be at school registration at 7 sharp. I will possibly see you there, possibly not. I don't know the protocol.

Sorry for messaging you at 11pm (Kids, amiright?). I look forward to your reply.

Peter

According to Psychology, men are more “likely to have avoided such restrooms.” (Ph.D.) Men are more uncomfortable because there are some men who “‘feel’ like a woman and thereby use women’s bathrooms [as] a slippery slope [for] all types of these sexual crimes.” (Elizabeth Lee Vliet) The reason that men were more prone to avoid such bathrooms is because they would be falsely accused of being a sexual predator. They know how men think and they know that some men will use gender-neutral bathrooms to their advantage.…

Today’s society is filled with many issues. From the A-listers to the impoverished, there is always some pressing matter that needs to be fixed. One issue that is common through all of society is the categorization of all people. The generalization of certain kinds of people is embedded into the minds of most of the twenty-first century generation. The stereotyping of people in Aldous Huxley’s novel Brave New World parallels the kinds of stereotypes used in the modern world.…

Stereotype: A Threat to Intellectual Identity and Performance According to Claude Steele and Joshua Aronson, one cause of the relatively poor achievement faced by African Americans in school and by women in math and science-related fields is stereotype threat. This theory is based on the assumption that school success results from self-identification with the school and its subdomains which entails sustained motivation. If this relationship isn’t formed or is broken, achievement may suffer. Additionally, both authors advocate that an understanding and elimination of stereotype threats in an educational environment, also called “wise schooling,” is a solution to narrowing the performance gaps seen between the minority groups and white male students.…

Another effect of stereotype often known as white superiority can be seen in Mrs. Gruwell’s student, Ben who is the only white student in the class. He never speaks much in fear of the other gang members in his class. He prefers to sit in the front of the classrooms as close to the teacher. In the film, he was told to sit amongst the black students saying, “I can’t go back there alone” expecting to be harassed. This subconsciously indicate how white sees the black as a form of calamity and that black, being associatied with criminality in the media may have been a number of effects on viewers. .…

When I was listening to the audio “The problem We all Live With” brought be many questions as an American. Growing up we were forced to believe in this ideology that we are all created equal and we are free, but the question is are we? Since, I can remember we have always pledged to the flag of the United States every morning before class started. Just by simply breaking down the words on the pledge of allegiances we can analyze the meaning of those words. The pledge allegiances states that “ I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all”.…

Lately in the news there has been some controversy in the news about transgenders using the bathrooms they claim they have to use. Recently Donald Trump has made a statement about transgenders saying he has no problem with transgender people using whatever bathroom they chose. In my opinion I think that transgenders should use the sex of gender they were born with until there transformation is complete. I think they should make a separate bathroom for transgenders or since they are in the process (unisex) . I mean if it was just one single bathroom with one toilet and it was meant to be used for both sexs then I don’t think that we should worry about anything because nobody else would be in there with you.…

Today’s society has placed plenty of stereotypes upon Asian Americans. Labeling them as the model minority, assuming that all Asian Americans are intelligent by nature, seems to be the most common (Szu 2003). These stereotypes have been negatively affecting the growing population of Asian Americans in the school systems, as they are leading to teacher bias. Bias in the classroom can cause teachers to view all their Asian American students as intelligent and assume they are receiving academic support at home although most are not, this is highly affecting those who struggle academically. As a result, many Asian Americans, such as Hmong students are not reaching their full potential in the classroom nor are they given an equal opportunity (Doan…

Middle school is an inevitable phase of many of our lives. It is also a very memorable time- for both good and bad reasons. Yet, we all somehow manage to strive through no matter how tough the year gets. For me, at first, none of the typical horrifying middle school stereotypes fit how my sixth grade year was going. I had plenty of friends, understood my classes, and I didn’t appear to be too awkward.…

“Recess is an essential component of a comprehensive school physical activity program and of the total education experience for elementary school students” (NASPE) Some gym classes offered by schools require students to do a routine set of stretches, push ups, and other exercises. Younger students, after a period of time, find this unnecessary and often refuse to do the repetitive set of exercises. If they do not refuse to do it they only do the exercise partially or improperly. Some just do not do it for the sake of not following directions.…
