In a survey of 250 people, 59% of these students found stereotypes during school; but outside of class. When eight students were asked when a stereotype has helped them, two of these students said in a new school. This causes the idea of what could have helped them. When faced with new schools, students can seem lost or frightened in some instances. For example, there could be a group of kids seen as bullies. With this knowledge, someone would know to avoid that group. They may do this off only rumors heard from other students. This could help the new student not get hurt by the bullies, but he will have never met them. Students have also stated that stereotypes could help someone in school. 37.5% of the eight students believed this to be true. There is also the stereotype of someone who seems to be rude, being selfish, ignorant, and a bad student. This stereotype could initiate teachers to take a deeper look into the matter of this student. The student could then get the help they might need in their life. Some of the interviewees used stereotypes to help them on an unknown street. An unknown street could hide dangers. To keep that in mind, when seeing a strange man standing by an alleyway; you most likely won’t go up and say hi. Many have the first instinct to avoid the man. This may seem not a stereotype to some at first, but are you not judging what the man has in stored before meeting him? People's lives are the most valuable thing and stereotypes are able to help protect those lives at times. There is also the stereotype that homeless men need your help. This is true for most situations, but you don’t truly know that they need your help. This stereotype has helped many homeless people in need and one of the interviewees stated that they helped homeless people whenever they could. Evidence points to these stereotypes helping for the greater good.
In conclusion, stereotypes have lost the good it could have caused. Society has started seeing stereotypes as a way to destroy a community. Once society is exposed to the idea of stereotypes helping, there are many new ideas on the matter of stereotypes. There are many ways we are able to change these ideas to something more bright in the world. There were times that people have needed stereotypes to help them in unknown situations. Once you look at stereotypes with the glass half full, you can see the good that can come from the once hated
