Stereotypes have always been an issue in any part of the world. Stereotyping is a phenomenon or representation of an individual or group of people based on inaccurate information. Naturally these stereotypes are brought upon by ones’ skin color or ethnicity. Discrimination often originates from prejudice and stereotyping. A minority that time and time again gets stereotyped and discriminated against are African Americans. Depicting African Americans as dangerous has been engraved so deeply into society via a wide variety of media such as the newspapers, video games, movies, and television. Video games are nothing but a quick pass time for people to enjoy and let of some steam but depending on the ethnicity of the character it can change how you view their race as a whole. When games give you the option to choose if your characters ethnicity is black or white some people associate African Americans as being more violent then whites. In the article “Study: Video Games May Reinforce Racist Stereotypes”, by Alan Neuhauser, participants were asked to choose the race their avatar would be and then after match either everyday items or weapons to them. “Volunteers who played as a black character more readily associated the black faces with the weapons that those who played as a white character, the researched team found.” (Neuhauser) The media does a very good job at labelling blacks as being violent just so that video games can come and only reinforce that stereotype. “But if white people are fed a media diet that shows blacks as violent, they don’t have a realistic view of black people. It isn’t good to put yourself in the shoes of a murderer, as you do in many more video games.” (Neuhauser) They are constantly being spoon-fed that African Americans are a certain way and eventually after hearing a lie countless times people actually start to believe it.
