For ages people have been stereotyping and coming up with misconceptions about individuals or groups. They shape society, an individual's character, and even aid in the mental development of the brain. They both have negative and positive stand points depending on the topic of discussion which then results in their correlated reaction. For an example, if you have a negative approach then you will get a negative reaction and vice versa. Furthermore, our experiences in life are what aid in the creation of stereotypes and misconceptions. Male college students are not all of the false accusations and exaggerated truths our society has painted them out to be, but instead are focused and set on their future because they have entered a more serious and tough environment.
Society is impacted in many ways, however, it is through stereotyping and misconceptions that affects it the most. There are stereotypes and misconceptions on professions, appearances, gender, race, religion, countries, etc. These two key factors are what aid in shaping our social life and character. In the article, “How do stereotypes impact our lives?”, Melanie Greene explains why stereotypes were formed, “In order to make sense of the world and the massive amount of information that we gather from our five senses every second of the day we do need to cognitively make generalisations, and delete some information, or else we would become overloaded. Our generalisations are usually based on a mixture of experiences and beliefs. When we are growing up our experiences start to imprint on and create our own unique map of the world.” (Paragraph 4). This is often based on truths that are exaggerated, but through these stereotypes it becomes widely believed around the world. In the essay, “About Men”, Gretel Ehrlich explains, “What we’ve interpreted as toughness - weathered skin, calloused hands, a squint in the eye and a growl in the voice - only masks the tenderness inside” (Paragraph 4). While this interpretation of being tough is somewhat true, the majority of the American cowboys are opposite from what individuals may impicture. This also goes back to the statement that stereotypes are truths but are exaggerated. Meanwhile, misconceptions are incorrect assumptions or false statements based off of untruths. They are not prejudice nor are they discriminating although they are hearsay. In order to believe that stereotypes and misconceptions are real, people will first need to know the real truth which can often be the ugly truth.
