Male Vs Female Gamers Essay

Improved Essays
Ladies are not new to the world of gaming by any stretch. However, even in 2016, there seems to be a great divide in the gaming world between male and female gamers. It seems to exist partially to ignorance created by what I like to refer to as wacked out misconceptions of the lady gamer. I asked members of gaming groups that I am in, friends, co-workers, and every other random person I could think to ask…”What are some stereotypes you have or have heard about girl gamers?” I was not very surprised with the results; and basically, everyone chimed in with responses that I have summed up below.

1. ALL WE WANT IS ATTENTION

If I had a dollar for every time I heard that girl gamers and nerdy girls just want attention, especially attention from

WE USE BEING A GIRL TO WIN

Can we again mention how silly all of these are? We can take the heat just as well as you can. We do not need you to go easy on us because we have a vagina. We do not need your in game gold because we have Fallopian tubes. We do not need you to let us win because we have breasts. We are strong, independent, gaming women that don’t need no extra help.

6. WE ARE NOOBS

So, the logic here is that because I have different reproductive organs than someone else, my thumbs do not work? Damn, I must have missed a lot of information in my anatomy class. SIKE! We play just fine. Some of us are more skilled than others, just like with guys. As well, with all gamers, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. But that doesn’t mean we only play games we are good at. Where’s the fun in that? Personally, I am a weak first person shooter player…But you better believe you will find me on Call of Duty and Halo sometimes.

7. WE THINK WE ARE BETTER

Nah, we think we are equally good. Enough said.

8. WE ONLY PLAY CALL OF DUTY

Hahaha, good one! Just like any other gamer, we have our likes and dislikes and a diverse game collection. I reference WoW a lot, because it is my heart and soul (Lok’tar Agar!) but a Nielsen report from 2009 confirmed that there is an estimated 400,000 females playing WoW and women ages 25 and up accounted for 54.6% of the gameplay hours. We are

This shows that Video games franchises like ‘Tomb Raider’ are favorable by the male audiences due to the characters being so overly sexualized which grab their attention of these thirsty men. There are men out there that would spend their cash on games because ‘there 's a really hot chick in it’’. In the end sex does sell, most consumers would be attracted to video games with these sort of features. Compared to the female point of view of these unfair sexual representations, they would offer the same opinion as the male and prefer to choose something more sexier and feminine. Other video games without over sexualized female characters don’t gain much popularity compared to games with sexbomb characters like ‘Tomb Raider’ , ’Metroid’, or ‘final fantasy’.…

The complex world of gaming often tends to be perplexing to outsiders who do not understand the purpose of spending hours in front of a flickering computer screen. Gamers are frequently misunderstood because people who do not play video games seldom recognize the innumerable benefits of gaming. The reality is that there are countless positive effects of gaming on those who participate, including the ability of gamers to seamlessly interact with other gamers, the notion that games allow people to be themselves, the fact that games have the potential to help gamers accomplish things that they would be unable to accomplish in real life, the belief that video games offer opportunities for acceptance, and the fact that many games promote a positive message. A great deal of people find it extremely difficult to make social connections in the real world, because they are simply uncomfortable…

In this series, Sarkeesian utilizes many sociological and feminists theories to analyze female tropes in pop culture media (in this case, video games), highlighting how these tropes contribute to harmful and sexist towards women. Many others (i.e. gender activists and feminists) believe that 'harmful' tropes and stereotypes of women in video games can alter the perspectives of male…

This can be seen when women are not allowed to join certain guilds or groups because they are automatically assumed to be casual players because of their gender. In World of Warcraft, it is assumed that women will always fall under certain stereotypes, these ranging from playing classes that focus on healing, something like a nurse, to only engaging in pet minigames. There is also the issue of gender representation in games, the amount of women playing games is similar to that of men, but women are underrepresented to an extreme level in games, and where they exist in games they are usually only used as sexual objects. The technology exists to craft elaborate stories with realistic characters, but instead of doing so for women in games, they are typically just thrown in as objects for cis males to enjoy as background objects. In cases where women are characters’ integral to the plot of a story, they are typically playing roles that reinforce gender roles and negative stereotypes, the most common female character is that of the persecuted maiden or damsel in…

Gender Makes A Difference Gender plays a major role in affecting one’s career choices, as we see in the essays “Oh, Come On, Men Aren’t Finished” by Christina Sommers and “When Bright Girls Decide That Math Is a Waste of Time” by Susan Jacoby. In the first essay, Christina Sommers talks about how women are creating their ways to pull ahead in some companies but men are still doing the hard dangerous work. Likewise, in the second essay, Susan Jacoby discusses why girls more likely tend to dislike math and science although they make high grades on them. Both of these authors demonstrated that people are more concentrated on gender instead of the effort a hard worker puts into the work.…

Video game popularity is rising each year. But with all the popularity people are noticing how few of games portray a leading female role. Even if a female character has a leading role, almost all of the females are portrayed with fantasy body types to draw in a crowd. These women characters deserve to have a chance to entertain gamers just like any other male character, but it doesn’t have to be where their body is drastically overhauled to look fake. These things degrade females not only in the game, but it can have an affect on what happens outside the game.…

This led to a decrease in empathy amongst participants. This came from the participants being more tolerant of sexual harassment amongst females and females being more likely to view themselves as sex objects as a result of the game. The researchers built upon similar previous research by expounding on the question of how identification with the game character in violent sexist games affected the participant’s empathetic attitudes toward female violence victims. The results showcased that the research was conclusive with previous research revealing that video games have the ability to desensitize individuals as well as reinforce masculine beliefs to…

The sports world also needs to start recognizing the talent women have and not just the appearance of them. In most of the sports women play the uniforms reveal much more skin than in male sports. Women’s talents are often over looked more than their natural talents to play specific sports. Another reason women have a hard time playing male dominated sports is because people feel the women will be a distraction to the men. Women are often considered that they must look beautiful in order to play certain sports.…

Just like every other kid on the block , I was glued onto some sort of LCD screen since the age of 8. It was until I entered my first year of high school that I truly understood the beauty of video gaming. I was captivated by the fact that videogames could allow users to role play as certain characters and bring the story to life. It created a unique platform for friends to connect. Inspired by this new understanding, I decided that I wanted to create my own game.…
