Th over-all demographic I am surprise by how many people who reported that they are one race because due to my knowledge that people who lived in my neighborhood I am postive they cannot just be from one race. I am also surprise that there is more single mother than there is single father in my zipcode. Also another thing that surprise me about this demographic is there is more elderly male than female.

Stereotypes are everywhere in the world. Our ridged expectations of a community are sometimes all we know about that certain group. The students had a preconceived idea about the Harvard students being snobby and the Law students thought the students would not take the task seriously. This chapter really hit on many stereotypes throughout the chapter and how powerful it can be when stereotypes are broken. I would never think to take my class on a field trip to a courthouse to participate in a mock trial.…

As a foreign student, I understand what you felt in the airport. I experience race stereotype in Unites States. When I first came to here, some store severs gave wrong food to me because they misunderstood my English for ordering food. Also, some servers were inhospitable to me when I could not understand their saying. Gender stereotype is everywhere.…

Jenna, As for the PowerPoint, I really liked how you included both audio notes and written notes. The audio clips explaining the video clips were also helpful! As for the analysis of Radio, I found your social model examples interesting. Especially the film clip where the football team boys trick Radio into going into the girl’s locker room.…

Ordinarily I would not be enthusiastic to read an excerpt like Whistling Vivaldi and Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us by Claude M. Steele, but on the contrary, I found that I was extremely impacted, this reading opened my eyes to an infinite amount of possibilities that I had not been worried about before. There were multiple sections of this reading that was baffling, I choose to write about a passage that dumbfounded me completely, I found this on page four of the excerpt under chapter 2 about 7 paragraphs in and it states “I became an expert in the language of fear. Couples locked arms or reached for each other’s hand when they saw me. Some crossed to the other side of the street. People who were carrying on conversations went mute…

In my community, every day I see people struggling to maintain their lives because they are undocumented. I, myself, am able to understand this at a personal level because I hear the stories that they have to tell and I myself am undocumented. I have met dozens of people who have found their way into the United States in search of a better life than the one they had before, or have come in hope that they can support their family back home. I have spoken with these people and have found that they are struggling and that they are given a bad name because of stereotypes. The media has branded them as criminals, drug dealers, etc and I want to change the way people think about these people.…

Television’s role in Americans’ lives has grown since its invention. Many people tune in to television for entertainment and information, be it something as trivial as weather forecast or something as big as a terrorist attack. In many cases, what people see on the television programs becomes their perceived reality. With that being said, it is comprehensible for some people to unknowingly accept the stereotypes about minorities, such as Asian-Americans, that are promoted by television, thus expecting certain behaviors from individuals of these groups. But what effects do stereotypes have on Asian-Americans in the United States?…

It is quite rare for me not to know the characters I have to portray but this was one of those times. The main issue when it happens is coming up with a very convincing image, or at least a very attractive one. Except, as I have learned along the way, there is also a thing called providence that this time had appeared in the form of my editor. He came to me with an exact image in mind, the character gravitating in a sort of no space, no time…

    3) Why do you think it is so hard to congratulate a person for the birth of their child without some consideration of the baby’s gender, especially when research shows that there are no large differences between babies’ behavior at the young age? (one paragraph) It is so hard to congratulate a person for the birth of their child without considering the baby’s gender because it is already mentally installed in most societies that gender is either male or female. Few societies are open to genders that are considered taboo. The sex of a baby determines the way in which one would be treated based upon the specific gender roles.…

It seems as if everywhere you look misleading statements and statistics are provided on products or in the news on just about every aspect, you can imagine. It is as if statistics can be written in a way to draw the audience in. One area that blows my mind is diet products. According to ABC News (2012), the statistics on the diet industry are rather large with upwards of an annual twenty billion dollars in the U.S. spent in the industry to include diet books, drugs and surgeries. We are on the look for weight loss products and when the statistics state that participants in a study lost thirty pounds or three dress sizes in a short amount of time we want it.…

“Oh, it’s gonna be funny seeing you in one of these”, one of my teammate’s mom said as she handed me a camo t-shirt. My team decided we would be wearing pink and camo uniforms at our October breast cancer awareness tournament. Being the only black girl on the team I was the only one who would stand out in this uniform, but I didn’t refuse to wear it. In fact, I was one of the biggest advocates for it. I find that in society, especially in the city, people always expect certain things of you, especially when it comes to stereotypes within the races.…

Introduction Biological sex is indisputably clear; humans are either male or female. However, does it necessarily follow that social and cultural gender must be male or female? In the United States, I have experienced institutionalized stereotyping of how people identify their gender, known as gender identity. More specifically, many forms of identification require that individuals describe themselves as either male or female. While justified in medical circumstances, these social controls contribute to the institutionalized discrimination of non-binary individuals, or individuals who do not have a gender identity of male or female.…
