Stereotypes After College

Before coming to the event my initial thought was, the author just expanding on his thought behind the book, but once I was there and listening. I found that it was much more than just a story of two people, it is a story of how your decisions in life help mold your future.
College is not just about your degree but about the things you intend to do with it after college, about the live you plan on changing. No matter your position in life, or your social class, you can become much more than people expect of you. He went on to say, “You are not a product of your environment, but you are a product of your expectations”. This quote stuck out to me because being an African American female, we are stereotyped in many ways that I don’t think fit

In the beginning he was slightly nervous to be in a different environment, but that quickly came to an end when he made acquaintances. As a male in college the experience is not what was expected in high school. Many are focusing and getting the job done while taking it seriously.…

In modern-day society people are constantly passing judgment on others. They are unjustly classifying a person into a specific group because of a type of characteristic which is considered stereotyping. Even though someone is stereotyped and occasionally is correct, however, that is not always the case. It has become common to label someone based on their culture, gender or race.…

Stereotypes are very prevalent in the United States today. Throughout my life I have seen these stereotypes. In high school, I went to a predominantly black school and I witnessed not only myself, but also my friends being put into a certain group because of our skin color. When we would go play basketball we would be known as the “white boys” and all people thought we could do was shoot. I thought that maybe it was because they had never seen us before, but then my opinion changed.…

For hundreds of years, beginning from the time of colonization, African Americans were taught to self-hate themselves. The image of Africa has been portrayed negatively in a way in which the people of that country are said to not be civilized. Moreover, this quote implies people of color should not let others dictate who and what should be considered a standard model of character. African Americans must first embrace their own appearance and who they are as an individual; including acknowledging themselves before anticipating that others do the same.…

What I learned as an audience Eddie Scott explained how stereotype affects me. In his explanation, black people tend to think they are not wise as much as white people. However, there is not a big difference between black and white people. This stereotype fits me. I’m an Asian, so I tended to think I’m not wise as much as white and black people.…

    Stereotypes In STEM

Literature has been done on Asians in STEM, but lacks the separation of gender. The pervious literature has shown that Asians hold familial expectations and approval in high standing, due to their collectivist culture. While we know that Asian parents are more likely to support their children in science subjects (), we don’t know whether this changes depending on gender. Therefore I hypothesize that Asian women will have less familial support to participate in STEM than their male counterparts. I believe that there will be a negative correlation between females and familial support, because traditionally men worked, and women stayed at home, and through (so and so’s study) we know that women in STEM are still held to traditional gender roles.…

I read a little while back, that the issue with stereotypes is not that they’re inaccurate but incomplete. We all use stereotypes all the time without noticing that we do. Human nature is always so quick to judge, so quick to categorize other beings, narrowing down the diversity that exists within our society. Many stereotypical categories exist. In high school, there are the “Nerds, geeks, airheads, athletes, clows, freaks, and the ghettos.” No matter how hard one tries to avoid falling into a category, our student body, as well as the teachers, make certain that we do.…

In fact, most of the males on the floor walk around in their boxers. As you can see, women are seen as the underdogs, unconfident and unsuccessful, in STEM fields and as the years go by less and less female students are interested in STEM careers. Studies point to a media influence regarding the perception of women in these fields that cause girls to likely shed away or in some rare cases be inspired by what they see on the screens. Different forms of media, specifically cable television shows ranging from dramas, sci-fi and sitcoms largely influences viewer’s perceptions of women. More teen/adult shows such as Big Bang Theory, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Grey's anatomy, CSI addresses the gender gap, stereotypes, and issues of woman that pursue STEM. There is an anonymous tale that although the college campus is for furthering one’s education, there is a secondary component of discovery where students explore who they are as a person, such as defining their sexuality. What is sexual though? It could be the way a pair of significant others look at each other from across the room, it could be the way a person identifies themselves in terms of who they are attracted to or what sex or gender they would like to be intimate with. It could be anything. It could even be casual conversations between students on campus.…
