I always have a strong reaction of disgust when this person continually mopes around complaining of pain; which feels as if obtaining sympathy is her goal. Ordinarily I would not be enthusiastic to read an excerpt like Whistling Vivaldi and Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us by Claude M. Steele, but on the contrary, I found that I was extremely impacted, this reading opened my eyes to an infinite amount of possibilities that I had not been worried about before. There were multiple sections of this reading that was baffling, I choose to write about a passage that dumbfounded me completely, I found this on page four of the excerpt under chapter 2 about 7 paragraphs in and it states “I became an expert in the language of fear. Couples locked arms or reached for each other’s hand when they saw me. Some crossed to the other side of the street. People who were carrying on conversations went mute…

Moreover, when patients experience long-term inability to care for themselves or to carry out their roles in the family, other members often step in to take up these roles which requires substantial adaptation (and re-adaptation as the development of the illness changes). These instances can add to the stress resulting from worrying about the ill member. This stress, especially in caregivers is compromised by indisposition associated with their own aging, can be so extensive that caregivers are troubled more by depression, other severe health problems, and death than patients…

Society is made up of different groups of people based on age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, culture, having a disability etc. Being part of a certain group is not all there is to a person. People are often stereotyped because of the group they belong to. Rocking on the Porch Told through the experiences of an elderly woman on Sunday afternoon, “Miss Brill,” a short story by Katherine Mansfield, drew me to the memory of my late great-grandmother and the residents of her assisted living home. Silenced by their isolation, often people in the advanced stages of life are driven by a desire to participate in the world around them. Miss Brill finds her place in the park in the interactions between others and the scenery around her, just as those that spent Sunday afternoons rocking back and forth on the porch of the assisted living home found their place watching the families of others come and go. The reader can immediately picture the scene unfold in “Miss Brill” from the descriptions of the…
