Today, I was at Jiffy Lube getting an oil change on my car. I was reading the book Diversity and Social Justice and a Pakistani, Muslim woman asked me, “If I was attending college.” I answered her, “Yes!” Then, she asks “Where?” I said, “I was attending Azusa Pacific University for a Master of Science Degree in College Counseling with emphasis on Student Development.” Then she said, “I attend Chaffey Community College for an Associate Degree in Child Development.” I shared with her that I taught at Chaffey College for two and half years. Here response was, “No you did not.” This brings me into the many stereotypes about gender and African Americans that are not true for all.
