An example of Steinbeck using names to stereotype minorities can be seen through Curley’s wife. When Of Mice and Men was published in 1937, women were not seen as independent nor were they respected. “‘Whyn't you tell her to stay the hell home where she belongs?’ said Carlson”(Steinbeck 62). In this quote, Carlson suggests that Curley should leave his wife at home. He implies that she is inferior compared to the men and that she should stay at home, the only place where she is useful. Moreover, women were viewed as the property of a man. Steinbeck shows this by not giving Curley’s wife a name. This contributes to the idea that she has no identity of her own; her identity is instead seen as Curley’s property. Her lack of a name also conveys
