Steppenwolf Hero's Journey

The narrative of Steppenwolf, is the story of a long spiritual journey that almost everyone can relate to. I believe that each person searches, either for their entire lives, or for a specific point in their lives, for their authentic selves and endeavors to discover who they really are. In the novel, Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse, Harry Haller (Steppenwolf), is eager to determine who he really is. Throughout the novel, Harry is searching for a way to deal with all the loneliness, stress and scrutiny he puts himself under, which he dubs the “Steppenwolf ”. For many years Harry wants to end his life by committing suicide because he does not see a future for himself. He is tired of living in his bourgeois and lonely lifestyle and was desperate for change. I think that Harry (Steppenwolf) wants to abandon his humdrum lifestyle because it depresses him and causes him believe he has no worth. He expects that stepping out of his current existence will change his miserable mindset and will lead him away from his thoughts of wanting to end his own life. We see a full transformation in Harry’s life. He transforms from a lonely, depressed man, contemplating taking his own life, to stepping out of his mediocre lifestyle and finally feels comfortable and content around a group of people. The enduring memories the Araucaria plant gave him as a young boy, return to him. I believe we can all take a lesson from this story of Harry’s life and the transformation he went through.
