In spite of being given all the luxuries they have ever dreamt of, the children Benjamin and Anna treated Isabelle like a stranger. Isabelle struggled to fit in the family while the children wanted their mom and dad to reunite (Columbus, 1998).In the movie, Isabelle parenting style differs from Jackie's, causing conflicts between the two women. Isabelle's efforts to reach out to the children, becomes an uphill task. In the beginning, the children treated Isabelle the same way their mother did without understanding the source of their differences. Using the Beavers model to interpret the movie Stepmom, The family in the movie is made up of a father (Luke), mother (Jackie) and her two children; boy (Benjamin) and girl (Anna) and included in the family is a Stepmom (Isabelle). It was assumed that Isabelle was the cause of the breakdown of the family. Jackie held the role of the mother and was the pillar, and also took absolute control of the family. Jackie’s illness caused her to lose grip of her hold of her family and was forced to accept Isabelle to be a parent to her children and a wife to her ex-husband. Luke‘s role in the movie is portrayed more as an advisor than a father. Isabelle played two roles, a Stepmom and also as a wife. Isabelle and Jackie had different beliefs and values that cause conflict when it comes to parenting (Columbus, 1998).
