McMurphy helps the men of the ward by instilling confidence in them through his actions. McMurphy helps the men of the ward grow out of their original fearful personalities, and become able to express themselves confidently by laughing. When McMurphy enters the institution, Chief Bromden expresses, “Nobody ever dares let loose and laugh, the whole staff’d be in with notebooks and a lot of questions” (Kesey 15). The staff is able to intimidate the men of the ward with potential punishments, preventing the men from confidently expressing themselves. In every part of The Samurai’s Garden someone lived with a disease whether it attacked the physical body or the emotional. The characteristics of all the diseases lead to the same ending. After contracting a disease people would wallow in sorrow and contemplate suicide because of “honor” and society’s views. If suicide did not happen the people with diseases must then live in isolation from the real world. In challenging times, relationships become essential for survival; however it is those very same relationships that create hardship and torment. Tim O’Brien manipulates tone in his novel, The Things They Carried, in order to demonstrate the distress that arises due to his fixation on his relationships. In the chapter Ghost Soldiers, O’Brien is shot in combat and moved away from his companions, causing him to feel alone and act out in desperation to belong.
