Stephen King, one of the greatest authors in American history; his works have been known to be over-the-top and gorey and yet still so enjoyable to read. Why his stories so odd, nobody knows. Though his stories do tend to share some small details with his past and The Cat From Hell, one of his short stories, is no different. Without Stephen King’s childhood being as unstable as it was, his stories could not be as abnormal nor successful as they are today. To understand Mr. King’s past, the present must be examined as well. The Cat From Hell starts off with an old man who hired a hitman to kill an unusual target, a cat. The old man explains how this cat was sent from Hell to kill him and the three people he originally lived with. First, the …show more content…
As the doctor examined her, he declared her death to be an accident. In the following weeks, the cat set its eyes on a new target, another one of the man’s roommates. In their sleep, the cat smothers them, cutting off all airflow and eventually suffocating them to death. Just as last time, the doctor suspected nothing and just wrote it off as a natural death. Lastly, the third roommate decided to take the cat to the vet to have it put down. He sat the cat down into the car inside a picnic basket. Halfway to the vet office, the cat jumped onto the man’s face, clawing him and causing him to drive out of control and crash, killing him while the cat ran away. As the old man finishes his story, he orders the hitman to kill the cat somewhere away from his estate and bring back the tail. After accepting the contract, the hitman places the cat into 2 bags and sets it down into the car. Some time later, the cat manages to chew out of the bags and attack the hitman. They crash into a tree and to the hitman’s surprise, he isn’t dead. He soon realizes that his body is temporarily paralyzed from the shock of the crash. The cat …show more content…
As a child, Stephen King’s family wasn’t very financially stable. His mother was often between jobs and his father left him, his brother, and his mother. The three of them traveled around as Stephen and his brother attended school in different places and lived with relatives while their mother supported them in any way she could. Eventually, his family settled down in Durham, Maine, and he went on to attend high school in Lisbon Falls. He made friends and wrote stories whilst attending school, but always felt different than his friends. ¨I often felt unhappy and different, estranged from other kids my age.¨ The abandonment of his father and estrangement of his peers seems eerily similar to how the old man was left alone with the cat. Left alone as the feeling of loneliness set in, and all he had was his books and brother. His unconventional writing style comes from the side effect of lack of socialization. Different ideas came together, but there was no one to help filter those thoughts, so they manifested themselves into a corrupted story. And the lack of a father figure doesn’t bode well on one’s psyche, so that could have easily left a bad impression on Mr.

When the narrator in the Black Cat begins his story, he insists upon his sanity, and clarifies to the reader that the sole purpose of the narration is to unburden his soul. As he continues, it becomes evident that his aim is instead focused upon reliving and understanding the murders he committed. Throughout the narrative, the man contextualizes his guilt by denying the agency of his thoughts while claiming ownership of his actions. To begin his story, the man insists, “…mad I am not – and very surely do I not dream” (Poe, 1). In saying this, he acknowledges the insanity of which his story embodies, but holds that they are mere events governed by fact while insisting upon his own standard state of mind.…
