Stephen King’s first novel, Carrie, has a relatively interesting story behind it. The story stemmed from a challenge given to King by a college friend to write from a female perspective (“How Carrie Happened”). Inspiration for the opening scene arose while King had been working as a janitor at a high school and had to clean a girl’s locker room; he had noticed that the girl’s room, unlike the boy’s, had had pink curtains covering their showers. Another source of inspiration was a LIFE magazine article about adolescent girls and telekinesis.
The most alluring influences were two girls whom King had known back in his elementary school days, but both girls had died before the creation of Carrie. One
