As King argues, horror is important because it can help bring psychic relief. People are able to “lapse into simplicity, irrationality, and even outright madness”(King 2). People do not get a chance to do this often so when there is an opportunity, they take it. These emotions are the emotions King calls “anticivilization emotions [and] they demand periodic exercise”(3). These emotions refuse to go away, so people feed them horror movies or sick jokes just often enough so they don’t “starve”, or take control. Although those who oppose this idea may say that feeding into those dark feelings too often will result in being overcome by them, people are able to resist things that they seriously enjoy.
