Stephen King was born in 1947, in the city Portland, Maine. As a young boy, he loved scary books, Such as, The Tales from the Vault. In Addition, he also loved science-fiction movies that featured monsters. In high school, King began writing strange short stories. However, none were published. In his stories he enjoyed using small towns as settings for eerie, frightening events, most likely because he lived in small towns himself.
