Stephen Hawking was born on January, 8, 1942 in Oxford, England. His parents were both well educated, and knowledgeable people. Both his mom and dad went to college at the University of Oxford. In 1974, Stephen’s research led him to a finding that would make him famous in the science world. He discovered that black holes weren’t vacuums like everyone believed them to be. Stephen showed that matter in the form of radiation can escape the gravitational force of a collapsed star. After he shared his discovery he became an instant celebrity in the science world. After his breakthrough Stephen mostly did research, but occasionally would teach at universities as a visiting professor. By 1969 Stephen was in a wheel chair, and by 1980 the Hawking family had to have a graduate take care of Stephen. Some things Stephen could do without any assistance, but for the most part he needed a nurse. At that time Stephen was also beginning to lose his ability to speak. 5 years later Stephen required 24 hour care, and could no longer talk. Since Stephen could no longer speak he used a computer that would talk for him. The computer was directed by muscle movements, but since he still had use of his fingers he simply clicked on the screen with a mouse. Today, Stephen still uses the computer, but now the program is directed by one of his cheek
