We immediately became immersed in an unfamiliar culture, an experience which was both engaging and challenging. Although we had been visiting the island for several years, our prior involvement with the local culture, while interesting, had actually been somewhat limited. An additional complication that we soon became cognizant of was the fact that we were deciphering not only one, but multiple West Indian cultures, which at times appear similar, but have distinct differences, of which we were not always astute enough to discern. He has embraced friendships with those who might be very different from him, and appreciates the mutual self-discovery that occurs within those relationships, even if their points of view never line up. He has learned not to judge by appearance or preconceptions, but instead to seek to both understand others and to be a positive influence on …show more content…

The gesture includes holding your hand up with the palm facing outward; extend your thumb and part your fingers so you index and middle fingers are tighter and your ring finger and pinky are together. The blessing that accompanies the gesture, “Live long and prosper”, was based on a Jewish consecration.…

Socrates was one of the most noted opponents of the Sophists. As a teacher of dialectics, he was interested in the quest for the truth rather than the art of persuasion (Joseph 110). According to some of the Socratic dialogues recorded by Plato, Socrates thought Sophists were a threat, not because they promoted atheism or immortality, but because they set themselves up as experts on the question “How is one to live?” without having the necessary knowledge. Socrates was concerned that if people’s lives were ruled by rhetoric instead of being guided by philosophy, the pursuit of happiness would overtake the pursuit of the…
