Novels and films both have their own unique benefits and characteristics. Films bring out fictional worlds to our eyes whereas novels let our figment of imagination take control. Both novels and films, have a huge role in showcasing relationships, whether they be positive or negative. The relationships we form influence our decisions and provide us with a sense of belongingness. The people we surround ourselves with are another big influence on who we are as a person or who we can become. “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” is both a novel and a film adaptation, written and directed by Stephen Chbosky, which showcases the importance of relationships in one’s life, one showing this more than the other. The film makes some minor and major changes towards its plot which affects Charlie, the main protagonist and his relationships. Differentiating between the novel and its film adaptation, the novel stays true to developing Charlie’s character and his relationships, which are ultimately his emotional support systems.

A mutual and strong understanding between a student and teacher is one way for a student to reveal thoughts and feelings that they may not be comfortable revealing to someone else. Changing Charlie’s relationships and in a way him as a character changes the impact of the film on the audience. The changes could be made on purpose by the author as he is also the director, so that movie does not get censored or a R rating. Since some aspects of the original plot are changed in several ways to make the film more believable, the changes end up reducing the emotional impact of the film
