In everyone's life it is guaranteed that there will be bumps and conflicts. These bumps can come out of nowhere and change your whole point of view. Charlie is a socially awkward teen that is known as a wallflower. He is someone that does not feel the need to make an appearance for himself. He would rather watch life from the sidelines instead instead of being in the moment. But Charlie can no longer watch life from the sidelines. Two teens enter his life “Sam” and “Patrick” and attempt to remove him from such a mundane life style. Stephen Chbosky used characterization to show that Charlie's life takes a turn and changes his everyday life. Charlie shows numerous times that the way he views things will slowly changes through the use of characterization. Normally Charlie has no interest in anyone in school until he actually meets Sam. He meets her at the football game but doesn't fully see her till they go to the “big boy” to chain smoke. Charlie realizes the feelings he has for her at that moment. “And even though I thought Sam was very pretty and nice, and she was the first girl I ever wanted to ask on a date someday when I can drive.”(20) Stephen Chbosky begins to show how it'll change the way he wants to be seen. …show more content…
The choices Charlie makes are mostly bad but but he does them because he has realized what it is like to change. Charlie went from being alone to having friends and making decisions because he knew that they would either help someone or it would help him. He felt what is was like to belong and what is like to have actual fun and he did not want to let that feeling go. His actions can show a reader that sometimes watching life from the sidelines isn’t the most ideal thing to do. Having fun and doing things for the benefit of others can make you feel something you’ve never felt

For example on page 6 paragraph 9 John Updike shows more of Charlie's personality while he is talking to Joan, he does this by writing about how Charlie tried to be funny and impress her while they talked. I think he does this to show that while Charlie is sure he loves her he also is scared that she’ll reject him. Plus Charlie is still a young kid and is pretty insecure about her which shows in the way he talks to her. Furthermore on page one, paragraph when Joan is saying “.. but I don’t see what is the point of homework.”…

Craig Silvey’s 2009 novel Jasper Jones presents the story of “a foal being born”; that is, it is the coming-of-age story of thirteen-year-old boy Charlie Bucktin. Set in 1965 in the fictional, rural mining town of Corrigan, Western Australia, it tells the story of Charlie’s development of morals and his recognition of the injustices of the world. It explores knowledge and its burdensome characteristics during his loss of innocence, and, additionally, delves into the idea of proving one’s self in the world; learning to stand up both for one’s self, and for what is right. In Jasper Jones, literary techniques, namely metaphors, personification and intertextuality, enable Silvey to illustrate the roles morality, knowledge and proving one’s self…
