-Stephanie Oakes, a writer that I had never heard of, wrote a book that I don’t think I will ever forget. From the beginning of the novel, I was already hooked. Her writing was very compelling and it is what drew me to read chapter after chapter. Another thing that I appreciated throughout the novel was how she wrote her chapters. I liked how she condensed the chapters and filled them with only pertinent information. The thing that annoyed me about the novel was how she left a lot of unanswered questions at the ending of the novel. Minnow is seen throughout the novel fighting against the norm of her old society and today’s society. Back in her cult, Minnow fought against her society because she believed in different ideologies than the Prophet, her leader, was teaching everyone else. This opened her up to be an easy target for torture because she was considered different than everyone else. Her cult, and even her own family, were against her rebellious act and at one point, were apart of her torture. In the society of the cult, Minnow struggles to fight back against the assumption that she is hopeless because she does not have hands. She fights back against this by learning to read and type. This novel not only has a compelling topic, the corruption of religious cults, but it also provides awareness about our society today. This novel is filled with humor and sadness and is filled with moments when you just want to reach through the pages to hug Minnow Bly because you either feel bad for her or because you relate to her. This novel was written beautifully in describing the struggles of being a girl in a society where you are not accepted if you don’t follow the norm. This novel spoke to me and left me with lingering questions that will stay with me. When reading this book, I hope people see the same message as me and feel the same impact of one girl’s struggle against
