In the beginning of Stephanie Nielsen's speech she explains how she met her husband. She said the first time she saw him she felt electrified; at that moment the sound system made a squealing screech. "It was like that," she said much to the audience's amusement and laughter. She proceeded to tell the story of her experience of August 16. She had been on a tragic airplane crash that left 80 percent of her flesh severely burned. In order to heal she was placed in a medical induced coma for three months.
Her speech gets pretty graphic (as she forewarns) when she starts discussing her treatments and skin graphs. Her body had to be scrubbed clean and at times her body would reject skin the new skin tissue. When this happened she would be scrubbed clean again and new patches would be replaced. As time passed in the hospital she would ask doctors to take down the pictures her children had drawn for her, they didn't look like me anymore, she explains. She gets emotional as she describes viewing herself for the first time, she was frightened. When looking in the mirror she did not recognize the person in front of her.
