Today I met with other members of the Bureau of Sexually Transmitted Disease Control (BSTDC), Ms. Kira Smith and Ms. Maria Soto. They both warmly welcomed me as a colleague who will collaborate and be a valuable member to the team. I sat with Ms. Smith, the coordinator of the Step Up School Screening Program. She described some of the logistics of the program. Basically, the program team is assigned to work in public schools that have a high rate of chlamydia and gonorrhea. First, the team gets permission from the principal of the school. After receiving approval, the high school students would listen to a PowerPoint presentation, which Ms. Kira shared with me. After shadowing her for a few weeks, I will assist her in the presentation and screening …show more content…
Soto. She briefly introduced me to other members working in her team for the Chelsea Clinic Mobile Van. This van provides HIV screening to members of the LGBTQ population who live predominately in the area. I expressed my desire to be trained on how to screen individuals for HIV, which I will be able to perform during the course of the internship. This public health skill aligns with the needs assessment area I of the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC). I will also provide individuals with information regarding where they need to go in case they would like to meet with a doctor and/ or have access to health services. I was pleased that the team made a list of locations for individuals from a vulnerable group such as a transgender person would have access to healthcare care that are culturally appropriate to them—especially if he or she belongs to a minority group. In sum, I am excited to start to my internship. I believe it will provide me with the experience that I need in order to serve vulnerable populations in general. Additionally, my hand-on experience will be critical in the future as someone who will represent minority and other vulnerable groups as a future research and federal

President Barack Obama once said “When all American are treated as equal, no matter who they are or who they love, we are all more free.” As a Hispanic LGBTQ American, these words resonated with me. In my exposure to a plethora of cultures, in my personal experience and academic career, I have had the privilege to understand and further appreciate many lifestyles. Through these experiences, my mission: to serve toward compassion and respect, rather than intolerance and isolation, has remained clear. These past 8 years, Obama has been a champion for LGBTQ+ Americans.…

The landscape for transgender healthcare has been radically impacted by the passage and implementation of the Affordable Care Act [ACA]. The ACA paved the way for the state and country to address the discrimination and barriers to accessing care that many transgender people have experienced. Over the past few years there have been significant changes to trans-specific healthcare coverage, which can be attributed to the clarification of Senate Bill 2 and the state and federal mandates. In this paper I will discuss the laws more in-depth, how they affect Kaiser Permanente specifically, and some recommendations on how to support fully inclusive healthcare. Background…

In Dean Spade’s book Normal Life, healthcare justice and systemic issues regarding gendered treatment and access to healthcare are discussed in depth, with a focus specifically on the effects of injustice and inaccessibility to transgender and intersex individuals. Normal Life was extremely personal in terms of the subject matter, which made it difficult to read through; however, I found myself nodding along as he outlined and went into detail on the various mechanisms surrounding the discrimination of people like me. The actions being made currently by neoliberal social and political movements are not enough to achieve the goals that trans political activists strive for, nor do they make much progress in doing so. However, they are much more…

When it comes to addressing disparities in the United States, people tend to think of each issue separately. It is easy to get overwhelmed with the racial issues that revolve around today’s society. Educational disparities occur because minority students tend to live in impoverished neighborhoods where schools are not as good and families do not have the money to pay for college. Health care disparities occur because there are no clinics or doctors in impoverished areas willing to help. However, these issues can be addressed by using an intervention that connects multiple issues and fixes disparities in each area.…

    1) Briefly describe your exposure to medicine As the daughter of a pediatrician, the medical field has surrounded me my entire life. However, my familiarity with the details of medicine expanded at age 15 when I began to volunteer at the C.A.R.E. Clinic, which provides medical care for the uninsured. My internship at a medical examiner’s office exposed me to the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the medical causes of death. In college, I explored medicine by volunteering in the emergency department at Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota in St. Paul and participated in a Global Medical Brigades trip to rural Honduras.…

Attending a school that emphasizes diversity like the University of California, Los Angeles allowed me to interact with dissimilar people and immerse myself in many cultures different from my own. Through conversations outside of class and attending multiple culture nights, I was able to experience some of the customs, values, and beliefs of other cultures I had never been previously exposed to. However, most of my understanding has come from my service in Dr. Amy Waterman’s lab at the UCLA Transplant Research and Education Center. The research lab aims to reduce racial disparities in transplant. An example of our discoveries during research was results showing that minorities, especially African Americans, are less likely to pursue living…

I explained that I was a nurse assistant and I was there to help, he then welcomed me into his home. When I stepped into the house Cockroaches scurried at my feet and the smell of necrotic tissue filled my nostrils - this man had not been cared for in many months.
